The standout linebacker has been sidelined for all of training camp with a calf injury. He’ll play if he practices well this week.

He suffered the injury Monday at practice. ''They didn’t tell me anything yet,’' Edwards said. ''I don’t know what to say, man. Damn.’'

It appears his ankle injury is minor. He’s been among the top five IDP linebackers for two straight seasons.

For now, this is probably speculation. Edwards hasn’t endeared himself to the organization with a war of words with GM AJ Smith and a back injury. Matt Wilhelm could replace him, but that would still be very surprising.

The organization’s eagerness to trade Edwards probably isn’t helping.

Edwards, who was a standout IDPer in 2005, is reportedly unhappy with his current contract. Miami may view the aging but still productive veteran as a replacement for Junior Seau.

As New England’s current roster stands, they’ll be relying on inexperience at the linebacker position. Edwards, who knows the 3-4, has reportedly been on the trade block since April.

The Saints have offered a fourth-rounder for the veteran linebacker but San Diego is now steadfastly seeking a third-round pick. Matt Wilhelm has taken Edwards’ spot in the starting lineup.

At this point, we doubt he’s going to play for the Chargers this season. He hasn’t practiced with a bad back all camp, and it’s not hard to connect the dots considering his relationship with Chargers GM A.J. Smith. Downgrade Edwards because of the uncertainty in IDP leagues.

New Orleans offered a fourth-rounder for the seemingly unwanted veteran, but Smith shot the proposal down. Edwards is currently not practicing with the team due to a back ailment.
