As has been the rotation in camp, Steelers fifth-round QB Omar Jacobs worked behind Shane Boyd in the team’s preseason opener.

While Boyd’s play was marginal, Jacobs did well to rebound from a first-series three-and-out with a second-possession scoring drive capped by a jump-ball TD to Isaac Smolko. Boyd and Jacobs are likely battling for a roster spot.

Jacobs tried to scramble around aimlessly before having the ball knocked out of his hands while still standing. The Steelers are considering going with just two quarterbacks this season.

It’s basically a minor league AFL. Leading up to the 2006 draft, Jacobs was considered a first-round prospect by some. He was taken in the fifth round by the Steelers and has never been on an active game-day roster.

It’s somewhat of a surprise. Jacobs is mobile and another fine MAC quarterback, but probably needed another year of seasoning. He’s a bit of a project, but talented enough to be a mid-round pick in a Draft short on quarterback talent.

He could go anywhere from the second round to the middle of the second day. After a dominating sophomore season, the athletic player was average as a junior. We think he’s the fifth best quarterback in this draft.

Steelers agreed to terms with fifth-round QB Omar Jacobs on a three-year contract.

Jacobs’ awkward throwing motion turned scouts off but Steelers QBs coach Mark Whipple says he won’t tinker with it. Jacobs will begin behind Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch. All three are former Mid-American Conference quarterbacks.
