Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery on his left hand.
It will come down to pain tolerance for Herbert as the Chargers prepare for a Week 14 matchup with the Eagles. Herbert said Sunday that he plans on suiting up one week after having his hand surgically repaired. It’s his non-throwing hand, so it might be possible for Herbert to play against the Eagles. If he’s sidelined, Trey Lance will likely start for LA in Week 14. It would be a huge downgrade for all Chargers pass catchers, though Lance would have some appeal in superflex formats thanks to his rushing upside.

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said Trey Lance will get first-team practice reps in goal-line scenarios this week.
Justin Herbert’s hand injury, which he is getting surgery for today, hampered him enough that the Chargers didn’t have him take any snaps under center. It’s possible that Lance handles some goal-line work for the Chargers this week even if Herbert starts the game, cutting into Herbert’s fantasy ceiling. We’d be a little surprised if such a scenario comes to pass, but the fact that the Chargers are openly admitting they’re doing due diligence on it says plenty on its own.

Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh said Justin Herbert will have surgery on his left hand on Monday.
The injury is a break in Herbert’s non-throwing hand. The Chargers’ QB1 played through the injury in Week 13’s win over the Raiders, but Harbaugh was unsure whether Herbert would miss time after the procedure, saying the team will see how the week goes for his star QB. He did enough to pull out the win on Sunday, throwing for 151-2-1 on 20 passes, but Herbert will face a tougher challenge in Week 14 against the Eagles if active. In the event he can’t go, former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance would draw the start, which would massively downgrade the fantasy stocks of all Chargers offensive players.

Chargers QB Trey Lance completed 13-of-20 passes for 120 passes and two touchdowns in Thursday’s Hall-of-Fame Game against the Lions.
The former first-rounder tacked on three rushes for eight yards. Lance started and played the first three quarters. Battling Taylor Heinicke for No. 2 duties behind Justin Herbert, Lance is getting more extended preseason run because of how little he has played in the regular campaign. Heinicke didn’t dress this evening. Lance is presumably the higher upside option, but Heinicke is guaranteed slightly more money. It’s not out of the question the Bolts keep three quarterbacks, but that is no longer the norm in the modern NFL.

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said that Trey Lance would start against the Lions in the Hall Of Fame game on Thursday.
He added that he’s looking forward to getting Lance some “game experience.” Lance, who has been living the Hall Of Fame game life for his entire career, led the NFL in pass attempts and passing yards in last year’s preseason action.
  • LAC Quarterback #19
Chargers signed QB Trey Lance, formerly of the Cowboys, to a one-year, $6.2 million contract.
The hype has never fully materialized for Lance at the NFL level but the Chargers now take a low-cost gamble on the once promising quarterback. If nothing else, Lance offers an intriguing developmental option behind franchise quarterback Justin Herbert, with the potential for general manager Joe Hortiz to flip the investment down the road. Taylor Heinicke remains on the roster and is likely the preferred game day backup to Herbert once games begin to matter.

The CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders have added QB Trey Lance to their negotiation list.
This comes after Lance received no interest in free agency. Entering his age-25 season, Lance has thrown a grand total of 461 passes since high school and has never appeared to be an NFL-caliber quarterback. Last year with the Cowboys, Lance completed 25 of 41 pass attempts for 266 yards and an interception. He added 11 rushes for 41 scoreless yards over four appearances for Dallas. He has five touchdown passes over 12 games in the NFL since the start of 2021. Lance could finally get some playing time north of the border and perhaps revive his NFL career in the coming years. There’s a good chance Lance has taken his final snap in the NFL, however.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Colts have Daniel Jones and Jacoby Brissett “on their radar” as veteran quarterback options.
The Colts are looking for competition for Anthony Richardson this offseason. In addition to Jones and Brissett, Fowler says Trey Lance and Justin Fields could also be in play. From a play-style perspective, both Lance and Fields could prove to be fits, although it’s hard to imagine any team pursuing Lance as a QB2 given his underwhelming stint with the Cowboys in the brief time he saw the field last season. Last year’s backup turned starter, Joe Flacco, has already expressed interest in playing next season. There’s been little talk of a reunion between the Colts and Flacco at this time.

Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said the team expects Trey Lance “to be looking for something different.”
And after two years being stuck behind Cooper Rush, who could blame Lance? Lance hits unrestricted free agency this offseason and almost assuredly is gone. The question at this point is: What kind of market is there for someone with five NFL starts in four years? Lance is still just entering his age-25 season, so someone will dream on the tools. But it’s hard to imagine it would be more than a backup role for the North Dakota State product and former third overall pick.

Trey Lance completed 20-of-34 passes for 244 yards in the Cowboys’ 23-19, Week 18 loss to the Commanders, adding six carries for 26 yards.
Lance got the call for his first start in 28 months after spending the season as the Cowboys’ No. 3 quarterback. He got off to a fast start, tossing a floater to Jalen Tolbert for 31 yards as his first completion. However, the Cowboys offense floundered the rest of the game, failing to finish many drives in an ultimate loss. Lance played four games in 2024, ending his fourth NFL season as a reserve quarterback with 266 passing yards, one interception, and no touchdowns. The Cowboys have decisions to make with their backup quarterback spot as both Lance and Cooper Rush are set to hit free agency. We have only seen one start from Lance in over two years, making it difficult for him to have any sort of fantasy relevancy moving forward.
