The IOC listed seven countries as “interested parties” for the 2036 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, the next Games looking for a host.
Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Türkiye are in “continuous dialogue with a stated interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.”
On Sept. 26, German officials announced that it planned to bid with Munich — which hosted in 1972 — for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games.
Qatar announced a bid with Doha in July 2025. India sent a letter of intent to the IOC in October 2024.
Hungary has won the most Olympic medals of any nation yet to host a Games.
South Africa could become the first country from Africa to host. Dakar, Senegal, is hosting the Youth Olympics from Oct. 31-Nov. 13.
Türkiye, like India, Qatar and Hungary, has never hosted. South Korea hosted the 1988 Seoul Summer Games and 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games.
Other possible interested parties have until an Oct. 31 deadline.
The host will be chosen in mid-2029 with the IOC returning to choosing a Summer Games host seven years out.
The next two Summer Games will be in Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.
LA received the 2028 Games in 2017 — when Paris was also named the 2024 host. Brisbane was named 2032 host in 2021.
Under recent host bidding reforms, the IOC can enter targeted dialogue with what it deems a “preferred host” candidate rather than holding a bid race with multiple candidates all the way through a final IOC members vote, which it traditionally held seven years before each Games.
Starting with 2036, there will be increased collaboration between the IOC and potential hosts at an earlier stage with more involvement from IOC members.
The next steps in the 2036 host selection process include virtual presentations to the IOC’s Future Host Commission in November followed by feasibility assessments.
In March 2027, the IOC Executive Board plans to open strategic dialogue with shortlisted interested parties.
The IOC sets out the next phase of the process for selecting the host of the 2036 Olympic Games. 🏅
