The U.S. finished the World Fencing Championships with two medals — silver in women’s team foil and bronze in men’s team foil, continuing its strong recent tradition in the foil discipline.
In women’s team foil, Italy defeated the U.S. 45-29 in Thursday’s final in Hong Kong in a rematch of the 2024 Olympic gold-medal match.
Lauren Scruggs was the lone holdover from the Olympic champion team. She was joined by Jaelyn Liu and Carolina Stutchbury in the final, plus Josephina Conway, who competed in the opening round.
Scruggs, the 2024 Olympic silver medalist in the individual foil, and Liu were also on the team that won the 2025 World title.
Lee Kiefer, who won the last two individual Olympic foil gold medals, was in Hong Kong but did not compete as she is pregnant with her first child.
The U.S. men’s foil team of Nick Itkin, Alexander Massialas, Bryce Louie and Marcello Olivares earned bronze on Tuesday.
They were edged in the semifinals by host Hong Kong 45-43, then crushed Japan 45-28 in the bronze-medal match.
Over the last decade, the U.S. won a medal in men’s team foil at two of the three Olympics (bronze at Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020) and six of the seven World Championships.
In individual events at these worlds, three Americans reached the quarterfinals -- Scruggs in women’s foil, fellow 2024 Olympian Hadley Husisian in women’s epee and Darii Lukashenko in men’s sabre.
