Despite spearheading Georgia’s recent unanimous decision to compete at the Sochi Olympics, newly elected Prime Minster Bidzina Ivanishvili said that received an invite to attend next February’s Winter Games just yet.
“I haven’t received an official invitation,” Ivanishvili told R-Sport. “I don’t know if I’ll go to the Olympic Games. We will see how our relations will develop. I do not rule out that I might go there.”
The Olympic host town is just eight miles up the Black Sea from Georgia’s shared border with Russia, but there have been diplomatic tension between the two nations since a brief war over land claims in separatist South Ossetia back in 2008.
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili had called for Georgia to boycott the Games, but Ivanishvili has sought peace and “normal relations” since being elected in October.
