Daiki Hashimoto wins 4th world all-around gymnastics title, largest margin in 13 years

Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto won his fourth world all-around gymnastics title, moving two shy of the record shared by Simone Biles and Kohei Uchimura.

Hashimoto totaled 85.998 points for his fourth victory in a row, prevailing comfortably by 1.799 over Yang Haonan of China in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

It’s the largest margin of victory in a men’s all-around at an Olympics or a worlds since Uchimura won by 1.958 in 2013.

“The sense of relief is stronger than that of joy,” Hashimoto said, according to Kyodo News.

Brit Joe Fraser took bronze.

Frederick Richard, the 2023 bronze medalist, was ninth, becoming the first U.S. man to place in the top 10 at multiple worlds since Sam Mikulak was sixth in 2013 and fifth in 2018.

Hashimoto, who also won the Tokyo Olympic all-around gold medal, had the top scores on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar. He qualified second into Thursday’s final.

“I know everyone talks about the streak,” Hashimoto, 25, said before worlds, according to Olympics.com. “They ask me what it means to be defending champion or what I think about trying to win four in a row. But to be honest, I think less and less about things like that with each year.”

Uchimura, who won six consecutive world all-around titles from 2009 through 2015, plus Olympic all-around gold in 2012 and 2016, and retired in 2021, was in attendance.

“I’m sure (Hashimoto’s) sense of responsibility has grown to keep standing on the same stage as I did,” Uchimura said, according to Kyodo News.

Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka, the 2024 Olympic all-around champion, qualified first, but fell on his vault (his fourth routine) and on high bar (his last routine). He ended up eighth.

China’s Zhang Boheng, Hashimoto’s primary rival the last five years, didn’t compete at worlds. Zhang beat Hashimoto and Oka at the Asian Games in Japan on Sept. 21.

Yang, the 23-year-old Chinese national champion, earned silver on Thursday in his first World Championships.

Worlds continue Friday with the women’s all-around final, live on Peacock and NBCSN at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Skye Blakely and Claire Pease will look to extend a streak — at least one U.S. woman made every Olympic and world all-around podium dating to 2003, a streak of 23 global championships.

Frederick Richard eyes his first national all-around title at the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships this week, live on Peacock and NBCSN.
