World all-around silver medalist Leanne Wong withdrew from this week’s Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships after hyperextending her knee in training on Tuesday.
“This isn’t how I wanted this week to go, but I trust that God’s plan is greater than my own,” was posted on Wong’s Instagram. “I’m grateful for a strong week of training leading up to this competition. Unfortunately, I hyperextended my knee during yesterday’s podium training and will need to rest and recover. Thank you all for the love and support. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and trusting the process. Wishing all the competitors the very best this week!”
Wong, 22, was runner-up in the all-around at both the U.S. Championships and World Championships in 2025 behind Hezly Rivera and Russian Angelina Melnikova, respectively.
She was also an alternate for the last two Olympic teams.
The women’s competition at nationals takes place Friday and Sunday, live on NBC Sports and Peacock.
Rivera bids to become the second woman to repeat as U.S. all-around champion in the last 13 years after Simone Biles, who won a record nine titles.
Other contenders include two-time Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey, who returned to elite competition this season for the first time since the Paris Games, and Skye Blakely, the runner-up to Biles at the 2024 Nationals before rupturing an Achilles.
Gymnasts are also vying for spots on the five-woman team for October’s World Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The roster will be named after a selection competition in early autumn in Crossville, Tennessee.
Wong is still eligible to petition for a spot at the selection competition and can still make the world team.
