Olympic ski cross gold medalist Sandra Naeslund of Sweden has sustained a season-ending leg injury for a second consecutive year.
Naeslund, 28, fractured her tibia in a crash at the season-opening World Cup in Val Thorens, France, last weekend.
“The competition season ended before it even started,” was posted on her social media.
Naeslund missed the last two months of the 2023-24 season due to a meniscus injury that required surgery.
Naeslund won world titles in 2017, 2021 and 2023 in addition to her Olympic gold. From 2021 to 2023, she won 17 consecutive World Cups.
Canada’s Marielle Thompson, the 2014 Olympic gold medalist, has been the top ski cross racer in Naeslund’s absence.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist David Wise is competing in his last Olympic cycle before retirement.
