Suni Lee hopes to return to a full gymnastics competition schedule in 2027 for her first meets since the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“I have goals,” Lee told coaches Jeff and Jess Graba. “I want to go to (U.S.) Classics, (U.S.) Championships and then worlds selections and then make world team. That is the plan right now.”
The first meet on that list — the U.S. Classic — will be July 24, 2027, in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, outside Chicago. The U.S. Championships are typically in August and usually followed by a World Championships selection competition a month later. The World Championships in Chengdu, China, are Sept. 29-Oct. 8, 2027.
First, though, she must see how the next several months of training go.
“It’s kind of hard to plan because you don’t really know what’s going to happen in a week,” she said.
Lee, the Tokyo Olympic all-around gold medalist and six-time Olympic medalist overall, returned to training in her native Twin Cities in July.
“This time around, it’s been a little bit more fun,” she said. “I’ve only been training for, like, two months, but it’s been more fun, and I’ve found myself enjoying going to practice a lot more, or working out. I feel like my sister, my agents, people can tell you this is the happiest I’ve probably looked while I was training in a long time, very long time.”
Lee supplements her training at Midwest Gymnastics with strength workouts at the Training Haus, adjacent to a Minnesota Vikings facility.
“This is something new that I’m trying,” she said. “This time around, I’m trying to be the strongest I’ve ever been in my life.”
