With this being the only year in the four-year cycle without a global swimming championship in an Olympic-size pool, the world’s best were scattered among several major international meets.
That in mind, below is a compilation of the world’s fastest swimmers of 2026 now that all of the major meets have concluded.
There have been 11 individual long-course world records in 2026, the most in one non-Olympic, non-World Championships year since 2006, beating out 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2020. That’s no surprise as the super-suit era of 2008 and 2009 gets farther in the rearview.
On the men’s side, the U.S. owns the best times in the 100m breaststroke (Van Mathias, with an out-of-nowhere comeback story), and the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays.
France’s Leon Marchand, who won four individual gold medals at the Paris Olympics, switched up his event lineup, though he was slowed over the summer by an adductor strain.
While maintaining top spots in the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley, he’s also No. 2 in the 200m free and No. 4 in the 400m free, two events he has never swum at an Olympics or World Championships.
Four different U.S. women are ranked No. 1 in at least one event — Kate Douglass, Katie Ledecky, Regan Smith and Gretchen Walsh. In 15 of the 17 individual events that are on the Olympic program, the U.S. has at least one woman in the top three. Two Americans were in the top three in six events.
Ledecky is the world No. 1 in the 1500m free for a 10th consecutive year. The streak would be longer, but she didn’t swim a 1500m free in 2016.
Australian Lani Pallister is the first woman other than Ledecky to be No. 1 in the 800m free since Brit Rebecca Adlington in 2011, the year that Ledecky turned 14 years old.
Douglass continued to show why she may be the most versatile swimmer in history — No. 1 in the 50m free (world record), No. 2 in the 100m free (.01 off the world record), No. 3 in the 200m breast, No. 2 in the 50m fly and No. 3 in the 200m IM.
The last major shakeup to the rankings came at this week’s Asian Games, where 13-year-old Yu Zidi of China posted the second-fastest 200m IM in history.
