American Yared Nuguse capped his season by taking silver in the mile at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on Saturday.
Nuguse, the 2024 Olympic 1500m bronze medalist, led for three minutes on the streets of the Danish capital before training partner Robert Farken of Germany passed him in the last 20 seconds of the final straightaway.
Farken clocked 3 minutes, 51.80 seconds, prevailing by 53 hundredths over Nuguse.
The men’s 5km also had a thrilling finish.
Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the 2024 Olympic 5000m gold medalist, went from about seventh place at the 10-minute mark to the lead over Eritrean Dawit Seare around 12:20 with the finish line in sight.
But Seare then retook the lead in the last 100 meters to win by three seconds.
He’s the third Eritrean to win an individual senior global title in the sport after 2015 World marathon champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie and Zersenay Tadese, who won five world titles in the half marathon from 2006 through 2012, plus the 2007 World cross country title.
Ingebrigtsen was bidding for a second major title in the distance in eight days. He won the World Ultimate Championship 5000m on the track in Budapest last week, seven months after Achilles surgery.
France’s Agathe Guillemot gave Europe a sweep of the mile titles. She clocked 4:22.74, winning comfortably by 1.61 seconds over Ethiopian Freweyni Hailu, the Diamond League 5000m champion.
Ethiopian Likina Amebaw won the women’s 5km in dominant fashion by seven seconds, six days after winning the World Ultimate Championship 5000m on the track by 2.03 seconds.
Worlds finish Sunday with the women’s and men’s half marathons, live on Peacock at 3:10 a.m. ET.
