Patriots S Patrick Chung announced his retirement.
“It’s time to start a new life,” Chung wrote in an Instagram post announcing his retirement. The full statement can be viewed in the link below. One of the league’s most versatile and underrated players of the last decade, Chung walks away as a team captain and an integral part of three Super Bowl wins under Bill Belichick. New England will move forward with Devin McCourty, Adrian Phillips, Kyle Dugger and Jalen Mills in the secondary.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports S Patrick Chung, LB Dont’a Hightower, and OT Marcus Cannon plan to return to the Patriots in 2021.
Rapoport’s report is further confirmation that the Pats will get their key players back next season after they opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19. “Physically, all are in a good place,” Rapoport said. Without Hightower and Chung last year, New England allowed the 15th most yards per game and the seventh fewest points per game. Cannon will be $9.62 million against the cap in 2021, Chung will cost $5.13 million against the cap, and Hightower will cost $11.32 million against the cap. With upgrades at quarterback, tight end, wide receiver, and running back, the Patriots could easily be playoff contenders in 2021.

The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reports opted-out S Pat Chung plans to return to the Patriots in 2021.
Chung was one of a biblical wave of opt-outs for the Pats during the COVID-19 season. The 33-year-old is due an exceedingly-reasonable $1.1 million in 2021, so it stands to reason the cap-flush Pats will see what he has left in the tank following a solid 2019. Aside from a one-year sabbatical with the Eagles in 2013, Chung has been with the Pats since 2009.

Patriots S Patrick Chung has opted out of the 2020 season to the coronavirus pandemic.
This is beginning to get serious for the Pats, who have now lost Chung, Dont’a Hightower and Marcus Cannon in one 12-hour period. Players seem to be even more concerned about COVID-19 and the league’s protocols than they were letting on. Chung has a child on the way, and did not want to take any chances. One of Bill Belichick’s most trusted players on defense, Chung’s absence will create a huge void on the back end of the Pats’ defense. Coupled with their losses in free agency, the Patriots are beginning to look extremely vulnerable, even if Cam Newton can bounce back. 22 days shy of his 33rd birthday, Chung’s contract will toll to 2021, but his age means his future role will be up in the air.

Patriots signed S Patrick Chung to a two-year extension through 2023.
Chung gets a $3 million signing bonus and is now signed through his age-36 season. It’ll likely be the final contract of his career. The 34th overall pick in 2009, Chung has spent 10 of his 11 seasons in New England with a one-year stint with the Eagles mixed in there. Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon, and Chung were the main components of the Patriots’ three-man weave at safety last season, with Chung getting in on 654 defensive snaps. Harmon has since been traded to the Lions.

Belknap County Attorney Andrew Livernois released a statement indicating pending criminal charges against S Patrick Chung have been resolved.
Chung was reportedly cited for cocaine possession in late July. The terms of his settlement indicate he’ll have to demonstrate good behavior for a period of two years, submit to periodic drug testing and perform 40 hours of community service. Chung has started 122 games with the Patriots since they drafted him in the second round back in 2009. Chung now awaits NFL discipline.

Patriots S Patrick Chung (chest, heel) has been downgraded to out for Sunday’s matchup against the Eagles.
The Patriots should be able to survive without PFF’s No. 61 overall safety, but Chung’s absence is particularly good news for Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert. Ertz broke out of his three-game slump before the Eagles’ Week 10 bye, catching 9-of-11 targets for 103 yards and a touchdown against the Bears. Still, Dallas Goedert (4-39-0 on 5 targets) continued to play a full-time role inside of the Eagles’ two-TE heavy offense.

Patriots SS Patrick Chung was forced from New England’s Week 6 game against the Giants with a chest injury.
Chung, who entered the game battling a heel issue, was ruled out early in the second half. “Injury prone” early in his career, Chung has missed only two games since 2013. He remains an every-down player.

NBC Sports’ Tom Curren reports Patriots SS Pat Chung was cited for cocaine possession.
The alleged incident occurred in late July, and he’ll face an arraignment next Wednesday, which is just over a week before the regular season. There are obviously potential consequences here, including suspension, but they’ll probably wait until after the legal process plays out before moving on that front. Chung signed a one-year extension with the Patriots this season after continuing to play well into his 30s.

Patriots signed S Patrick Chung to a one-year extension through 2021.
A one-year extension for a player who still had two years left on his deal is odd, but Chung is an important piece of New England’s defense and has continued to play well into his 30s. He is now under contract through his age 34 season.
