England 4-2 Croatia live updates: Kane’s four-star Three Lions overcome lapses at the back

Harry Kane scored a pair of first half goals as the Three Lions outscored some shaky back end play in a 4-2 win over Croatia in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday to kick off their 2026 World Cup.

World Cup predictions: Can USMNT make a deep run?
Joe Prince-Wright, Nick Mendola, and Andy Edwards make their 2026 World Cup predictions ahead of the first day of group stage fixtures.

Harry Kane scored a pair of first half goals as the Three Lions outscored some shaky back end play in a 4-2 win over Croatia in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday to kick off their 2026 World Cup.

MOREWorld Cup daily schedule: What games are on today?

England manager Thomas Tuchel went for it and saw Kane convert a Noni Madueke-won penalty before the big man buried a header off a Declan Rice corner kick later in the half.

Martin Baturina and Petar Musa — the latter an FC Dallas star — scored equalizers to leave the game 2-2 at the break.

The Three Lions came out of the team room with vigor as Jude Bellingham scored a pretty solo goal down the right before Marcus Rashford came off the bench to give the game it’s final score line.

Will England’s back end rise, and/or can they outscore a weakness?

Jordan Pickford only faced 0.59 xG as Croatia’s first goal was a screamer and the second came off a clever play by Ivan Perisic in the box. Reece James, Ezri Konsa, and John Stones all had shaky moments as Nico O’Reilly was the only player in the back five to have a solid day, and Stones’ lack of minutes for Man City this season already had England fans nervous about his status in the team. Marc Guehi and Djed Spence both subbed into the second half and there’s nothing in this game to suggest they shouldn’t get an extended look.

It might not matter all that much for a while, though, as Tuchel put an attacking team out there and made attacking subs in a bid to put the game away rather than hold onto a lead. England had 36 touches in the box and out-attempting Croatia 22-10 while piling up nearly three expected goals. Saka and Rashford were very good off the bench to join Man of the Match caliber Kane, and the Three Lions scored four despite not calling upon Eberechi Eze, Ivan Toney, or Ollie Watkins. Super dangerous.

What’s next?

Croatia play Panama on Tuesday, the same day England tangle with Ghana. Panama and Ghana play later Wednesday.

England vs Croatia final score: 4-2

Updates
Marcus Rashford goal — England 4-2 Croatia

Saka gets the ball to Rashford and he’s got time and favor.

The Man United product cuts on his right foot and slots past Livakovic in the 86th minute.

It’ll be Andrej Kramaric and Nikola Vlasic — two very experienced playmakers — entering the game for Mario Pasalic and Martin Butarina.

For England, Jude Bellingham exits in favor of Djed Spence.

It’s the hydration break, and England make three moves:

  • Declan Rice leaves for Morgan Rogers
  • Noni Madueke departs for Bukayo Saka
  • Marcus Rashford replaces Anthony Gordon

The moves come six minutes after Croatian brought on Marco Pasalic and Igor Matanovic for Petar Musa and Luka Vuskovic.

Big change for Croatia

This was getting a bit out of hand and Modric is exiting the game for Mateo Kovacic.

Can Croatia get a hold of this?

Triple Livakovic save!

Three Three Lions (woah) threaten the Croatia goal off a corner kick but Dominik Livakovic keeps it 3-2 with three saves.

Lots of threes.

He saves O’Reilly’s initial header, Anthony Gordon’s softly headed rebound, and then sees Ezri Konsa’s desperation third hit go off his chest.

Jude Bellingham goal — England 3-2 Croatia

The goals continue after halftime.

Jude Bellingham tears down the right side off a pass from Elliot Anderson, dealing with Mario Pasalic on his arm to spin a shot that kisses the inside of the far post and dances into the netting.

3-2 in the 47th minute.

Halftime — England 2-2 Croatia

A great half for the viewer but Thomas Tuchel will be questioning his midfield and back line.

Harry Kane’s first-half brace was, of course, welcome, but England conceding twice in 45 minutes is bound to raise concern.

England are out-attempting Croatia 9-4 but possession is with their opponents. Maybe momentum, too!

Petar Musa goal! England 2-2 Croatia

England won’t make it to halftime with the lead!

A chipped pass over the top sees Ivan Perisic barely on side as he pops the ball down for Petar Musa.

The FC Dallas man keeps his composure and snaps a low bounding shot past Pickford in the fifth minute of added time!

Harry Kane scores again! England 2-1 Croatia

It’s a corner kick and Kane bulls his way to the top of the 18 to thud a heander through traffic for 2-1.

Martin Baturina goal! — England 1-1 Croatia

We’re level in the 36th minute!

Como midfielder Martin Baturina makes a late-arriving run to meet Petar Sucic’s cutback and snaps it home across goal with authority.

A flying Jordan Pickford gets a hand to it but it’s not strong enough to stop the ball from powering through the digits and over the line.

1-1.

Harry Kane penalty goal — England 1-0 Croatia

Corner for England and Luka Modric’s wild swing to clear the ball clips Noni Madueke’s thigh.

It’s an easy penalty. Now can Harry Kane bury it?

No! It’s saved by Dominik Livakovic but will have to be retaken as the keeper left the line early according to VAR.

Smashes it home.

England in white going left to right and Croatia in blue.

A little haphazard for the Three Lions in the first two minutes as Croatia win a corner kick.

Ajax CB Josip Sutalo gets to the ball at the back post but can’t contort his body to get a shot on frame.

England’s team keeps some big names on bench

Bukayo Saka is kept out of the Starting XI by Noni Madueke and Anthony Gordon. There is very good company on the bench in Morgan Rogers and Marc Guehi amongst others.

Nico O’Reilly is a forward-thinking choice at left back while Elliot Anderson will partner Declan Rice in the midfield, leaving Jordan Henderson on the bench.

Starting XI: Livakovic, Sutalo, Vuskovic, Gvardiol, Stanisic, Modric, Sucic, Perisic, Baturina, M. Pasalic, Musa.

England lineup, team news

Starting XI: Jordan Pickford, Nico O’Reilly, Reece James, John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke, Harry Kane.

What can we expect from England?

Well, we all know the narrative around England by now.

“Football’s coming home” is the chant, but it hasn’t since 1966.

Will 60 years of pain end this summer? Thomas Tuchel has been put in charge to make that happen and the signs are good for England.

Harry Kane is in the form of his life and looks sharp and ready to score goals galore. England have a plethora of brilliant attacking talents. And Tuchel is demanding a high-press and wants his team to entertain.

Defensively there are a few concerns but a more cautious approach has got England to the European Championship finals in each of the last two editions, where they lost to Italy and Spain.

They simply have to get to at least the semifinals to deem this World Cup any kind of success and that is a lot of pressure.

Tuchel’s impact during the game will be the big difference for England at this major tournament and everyone is eager to see what kind of difference his demanding coaching style, and personality, has on this very experienced team.
