England went close on several occasions but Ghana held firm to grab an impressive draw in Group L.

BOSTON — England were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana on a rainy Tuesday in Boston, as the Three Lions missed several glorious chances in the second half of their Group L clash.

Later on Thomas Tuchel’s side saw Bukayo Saka denied, then Nico O’Reilly hit the crossbar from close range and Harry Kane somehow smashed over the rebound as it wasn’t England’s day in Massachusetts.

Carlos Quieroz’s Ghana had a couple of great counter attacks and there were some close calls as Jordan Pickford and Ezri Konsa were almost caught out and Ghana wanted a red card and penalty kick respectively. They defended superbly throughout and only had 21 percent of the possession, as England couldn’t break them down.

England now face Panama in New York on Saturday at 5pm ET, while Ghana face Croatia in Philadelphia at the same time with both teams on four points and top spot in Group L up for grabs.

England players and Thomas Tuchel have been reacting to the draw and it feels like a defeat for them. You can tell.

England came so close late on to grabbing the win but Ghana defended brilliantly all game long.

Thomas Tuchel’s England will be really disappointed with the tempo of their display but sometimes it just isn’t your day.

Ghana were set up wonderfully by Carlos Queiroz and they put in a heroic effort, with so many defenders and midfielders stepping up.

That is a result which means both teams are very likely to go through to the Round of 32, but Group L is wide-open going into the final game.

Asare denies Saka with a fine stop, then O’Reilly hits the bar and Kane fires over

England pushing hard for a winner late on, as Saka curls a low shot that Asare saves well.

O’Reilly then heads against the bar from close range and Kane smashes the rebound over from a few yards out.

England can’t believe it. They should be 1-0 up.

Marcus Rashford comes on as Tuchel’s final roll of the dice

So many superb attackers on the pitch for England to finish this game but they just can’t break through.

Ghana are sitting so deep and all of this brilliant attacking players just haven’t been able to get close enough to goal.

Just over five minutes to go for England to find a goal...

Huge chance for Ghana as Eze is caught on the ball

England look to have got away with one there.

Substitute Eze is caught on the ball by Fatawu and he plays Adu clear over the top.

Konsa slides in and looks to catch Adu but no penalty kick is given.

Then Ghana almost get on the rebound but England somehow scramble clear at the offside flag is up.

The officials are just checking all of that but no penalty kick is given.

England have been caught out plenty of times on the counter today.

The Ghana fans are going for it in the stands here. They are roaring on their team as they try to get over the line with a draw.

Harry Kane hits a shot straight at Asare, then Saka heads over

Harry Kane gets some space in the box but drills his shot low and on goal, and Asare saves easily.

Kane will be disappointed with that. He didn’t catch it at all how he wanted.

Huge groans from the England fans here in Boston. Everyone thought Kane would bury that chance.

Moments later a cross to the back post finds Bukayo Saka but he heads over, as he looks frustrated with himself.

The hydration break is here and with 20 minutes to go it is 0-0.

Huge moment as Pickford and Adu collide

Ghana aren’t happy about it as a ball over the top sets free Adu.

Pickford comes rushing out and Adu catches him just before he’s about to clear.

England’s goalkeeper goes down and the foul is given. On the replay, it looks like that is the right call.

Adu caught Pickford but that was really close to Ghana getting clean through.

Saka and O’Reilly are on for England

Thomas Tuchel has made his first changes with Bukayo Saka and Nico O’Reilly coming on for Anthony Gordon and Djed Spence.

Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rogers are still on the bench for England with just over 20 minutes to go, which is a big surprise.

This feels like Saka’s moment to step up and win it for England.

Madueke curls over a great chance

A free kick is cleared to the edge of the box and Gordon finds Madueke.

He’s leaning back but his curled effort goes just over.

England are preparing plenty of subs and they need to keep this tempo up.

The ball is worked all the way across to Noni Madueke but his shot is deflected and cleared.

He took too much time to get his shot away on his left foot.

The ball then drops to Anthony Gordon but he hits a tame effort straight at Asare.

England’s fans roar in delight here in Boston. They are just happy to have anything to shout about given the lackluster display so far.

It took nearly an hour, but we have our first shot on goal in Boston.

Ghana on top against England

A long ball over the top catches out England and Antoine Semenyo is away.

But Jude Bellingham comes from absolutely nowhere to stretch out a telescopic leg to get the ball just when Semenyo looked like getting in the box.

Moments later the play is switched and Senaya is in, but Spence makes a wonderful last-ditch tackle.

Ghana with a couple of big chances at the start of the second half, but it’s England who are being forced to defend and they’re defending well.

How do England change this against Ghana?

England were very predictable and slow in that first half.

What can Thomas Tuchel do to change it in the second half?

After all, this was exactly the kind of situation he was brought in for.

It feels like Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka should both come on before the 60-minute mark, and probably Morgan Rogers too.

The trio of Anthony Gordon, Jude Bellingham and Noni Madueke have really struggled.

Half time thoughts — England 0-0 Ghana

England have had almost 80 percent possession but they haven’t had a shot on target so far.

That sums it up and Thomas Tuchel will be frustrated with that first half.

England have really struggled to get behind Ghana, and the African side are enjoying the way they are playing and defending.

The entire Ghana side is in a huddle at half time on the pitch on their own. They have put in such a wonderful defensive display. Carlos Queiroz will be delighted.

Harry Kane’s shot is blocked by Adjetey!

Just before half time Harry Kane gets his first sight of goal as he tries to wriggle past several Ghana defenders.

He does get a window to get his shot away but Adjetey slides in and blocks behind for a corner which Ghana clear easily.

England are really struggling to make the right decision in the final third and Ghana look pretty comfortable.

Antoine Semenyo almost wriggles free but England clear

Antoine Semenyo nudges Reece James off the ball and almost gets in on the left.

But a great tackle comes in.

Ghana keep the attack alive and win a corner after Semenyo’s effort is blocked.

It’s pretty clear that Boston has been one of the best cities to go to for a World Cup game, and this is a wonderful sight.

Fans of England and Ghana are making plenty of noise and getting on well.

England huffing and puffing but Ghana holding firm

England are well on top with 85 percent of possession, but they aren’t breaking through.

Ghana are sitting deep and defending well and clearing crosses into the box pretty easily.

England have to stay patient but the longer it stays 0-0, the more confidence Ghana will get.

Jude Bellingham is causing Ghana problems, as Rice smashes over

England have started well and are dominating possession.

Jude Bellingham is popping up in some nice channels on the inside right of England’s attack and almost gets free in the box.

Declan Rice drills a free kick which is touched to him just over the bar.

Harry Kane goes up for a header and is clattered by Adjetey, who heads the back of his head.

England get another free kick and they are pinning Ghana back.

The stadium is absolutely bouncing and England’s fans are taking up about 90 percent, at least, of the crowd.

England are on the attack early on with a few long balls knocked forward and it’s clear they want to get off to a rapid start here.

I’ve been speaking to England fans here in Boston ahead of this game against Ghana and even though they know it’s going to be tough to win the World Cup, they are confident they will go far.

Ghana got a late, late win against Panama in their opening World Cup game and that sets them up very nicely for this clash against England.

Carlos Quieroz has only just taken over but we know he can set teams up to be very solid and defend.

He also has Manchester City star Antoine Semenyo leading Ghana’s charge on the counter and England’s players know all about his quality.

Ghana will see a point as a really goos result from this game so they will sit deep and look to play counters as often as possible.

What are England’s expectations for this World Cup?

When you have a squad as good as England’s you will always be considered among the favorites to win any tournament.

But the expectation levels feel different this summer.

Speaking to England fans around Boston over the last few days, there is a general feeling that whatever will happen will happen and they aren’t expecting much.

Maybe that lack of external pressure and never-ending chants of ‘It’s Coming Home!’ will actually help the England players on the pitch?

Thomas Tuchel is a fine manager and his in-game management and tactical tweaks could be the difference for England at this World Cup.

England’s fans are choosing to enjoy the adventure rather than worrying too much about what happens.
