Premier League analysis, video highlights, results from a hectic Saturday

Overall, that is probably a fair result.

Aston Villa created the better chances but struggled to knit things together consistently. As you’d expected after such a tumultuous summer.

But fair play to new boys Hull. They hung in there and then kicked on in the second half. Mohamed Belloumi smashed the crossbar, then Oli McBurnie had a huge chance late on to win it but shanked it.

After three games back in the Premier League Hull have seven points on the board and are yet to concede a goal in three games.

Villa have yet to score a goal this season but this was their first point, as Unai Emery will be happier with the performance. Villa are still very much a work in progress with all of their new signings settling in and slowly being introduced.

Ryan Giles whips in a delightful cross from the left flank and Oli McBurnie has timed his run to perfection.

He’s clean through but he’s stretching a little bit for his shot.

McBurnie gets it all wrong and shanks the shot horribly wide from 12 yards out.

Oh no. He can’t believe it. McBurnie is the one player Hull would have wanted that chance to fall to.

Well, that would have a been a stunner!

A short corner is played back to Mohamed Belloumi and he drills a curler towards the back post.

Was it a cross? Probably. But who cares?

Suzuki is beaten in the Villa goal but the ball cannons off the bar and comes back out.

Hull City so close to snatching the lead.

What a player Belloumi is. A proper maverick.

Hull have add the odd cross or counter, but it is mostly Villa in control and they should be ahead.

First John McGinn is clean through on goal but tries to dink home a finish. He gets it horribly wrong and puts it way over the bar.

Then a slick move down the left sees Hemmings tee up Buendia from close range but he also puts his effort way over. He can’t believe it.

Villa are pushing hard for the opener. Just over 30 minutes to go. Somehow (because, poor finishing...) it’s still 0-0.

Nottingham Forest thought they had a goal in the 67th minute, but video review ruled it out for handball on the goal line. The Tricky Trees troubled Tottenham Hotspur’s sputtering attacking and picked up a point for the second straight week.

Spurs scrapped their way to their first point of the season, but they’re still yet to score a goal in three games this season. Roberto De Zerbi’s side is playing better than the results they’re currently getting.

Generally speaking, that first 45 minutes was much more like it from Aston Villa.

Ross Barkley went close but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis saved well and has been excellent.

Villa look much better but Hull will be happy with the 0-0 score at half time and will fancy their chances of grabbing something in the second half.

Still all to play for in Yorkshire.

Well, Enzo Maresca has been lauding their ‘ugly win’ and that is exactly what this was.

City were excellent in the first half and should have been ahead by two or three, even though they gave up some big chances.

Erling Haaland’s first half goal was enough to get the win, while City did need Donnarumma to make some big saves.

Coventry will be heartened by this display but they’ve lose three from three on their return to the big time. Frank Lampard’s side have at least got their first two away games out of the way at Arsenal and Man City. It will get easier.

As for Maresca, it’s three wins from three in the league for him at City and things are going pretty well and he will be delighted with a clean sheet. New signing Enzo Fernandez also looked very good on his debut and despite all of the changes, City are going to be right up there once again.

Well, both teams badly needed a win to get their season going and Crystal Palace got it.

Fulham have now lost three in a row to start the season and after being deservedly 2-1 up, new manager Alvaro Arbeloa saw his side collapse.

Fulham’s fans seem concerned about the general direction they are heading in and these results underline that.

As for Palace, well, Pierre Sage has his first points as a Premier League manager and even if some of their goals were a little fortuitous, they kept pushing forward and never gave up.

This win should give Palace plenty of belief as things start to settle down in the coming weeks.

A whopping 4.55 xG between the two sides but just the two goals.

Brighton take 20 shots to Leeds’ 10 but their only goal comes off a corner kick, as Luka Vuskovic headed home to answer Jayden Bogle’s 15th-minute opener.

Leeds now have five points while Brighton have four.

Fulham try to clear a cross and they can’t.

The ball pops up to Ben Chilwell who smashes home to make it 3-2. That was eerily similar to Palace’s second goal.

On his second debut for Palace after rejoining them on deadline day, Chilwell has delivered a big moment. He has only just come on for Mitchell who scored Palace’s first two goals. Only goals from left backs from Palace today!

Palace lead for the first time today with just over 10 minutes to go.

Coventry should be level!

A great cross from the right finds Simms at the back post.

He can’t head it on goal but the ball drops down to him a few yards out and he smashes it on target.

Big Donnarumma is there and saves with his face. A golden chance for Coventry to make it 1-1 late on.

They’re pushing really hard for an equalizer.

Maxim De Cuyper whips in a corner kick and no one deals with it until Luka Vuskovic nods home from extreme close range at the back post.

Trafford has had a good day but he’ll imagine a bunch of things he might’ve done to get to the ball and deny the 19-year-old.

Coventry City are pushing for an equalizer.

Substitute Loum Tchaouna is in down the right and his low shot across goal is saved well by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Matt Grimes then smashes another effort just wide.

Man City need to sharpen up here. Just over 20 minutes to go and they still lead 1-0.

Keeping in line with everything we saw in the first half, even the goal (which didn’t even count) was an all-out brawl. Morgan Gibbs-White couldn’t beat Antonin Kinsky with a chip and Neco Williams eventually bundled it home, but video review indicated that Williams handled it on the goal line… just as Sandro Tonali booted him in the head.

Both sides in desperate need of three points to kickstart their season, and it shows.

Kostoulas and Yalcouye both have given Brighton hope of an equalizer, but James Trafford has been there for Leeds.

Still 1-0 to the visitors and Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton do not have a number of attacking options on their bench including Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh.

The lineups are in for Hull against Villa at the MKM Stadium.

Hull have plenty of new players to choose from on the bench, while Gourna-Douath comes in to start.

Villa make one change from their narrow defeat against Arsenal with Mings in for Torres at center back. New signing Mbaye is on the bench.

City think they have a second goal, but the flag is up.

Replays show Enzo Fernandez was offside when he flicked the ball to Erling Haaland to finish.

It is all Man City now and Coventry are trying their best to keep the ball and not drop too deep.

Palace have come out scrapping and they are level.

Tyrick Mitchell surged into the box and Fulham half clear through Gonzalo Garcia.

But Garcia’s clearance is straight back to Mitchell and he finishes ahead of plenty of players diving in as the ball rolls over the line with Garcia totally missing his kick to clear off the line.

Mitchell doesn’t care. He celebrates wildly in front of the away fans. 2-2. Game on!

Olivier Boscagli takes the ball off Jayden Bogle deep in Leeds’ third.

He drives toward the box and the ball bounds around a bit before Pascal Gross steps onto the ball outside the 18 and just missed the far post.

James Trafford might’ve had the post covered, but it’s Brighton’s best chance. Still 1-0 Leeds now into the 56th minute.

Anton Stach has a ball fall for him in the box and he tries to pick out the far post only for Bart Verbruggen to stick his right leg into the path of the ball.

Still 1-0 Leeds early in the second half.

Sunderland were the better side, as they had one goal ruled out for offside and another laser shot smash the post. Brentford have attempted just one shot from inside 25 yards. Bees captain Nathan Collins had to come off after 17 minutes with an injury, and they’ve been all out of sorts since.

If you’re the type to say, “The game’s gone soft” and long for brutish 90s football, then Forest vs Spurs is the game for you. It never got dangerous or came close to crossing the line, but there was some proper throwback on display.

Spurs had more of the ball, but they only ever went with it where Forest wanted them to. Forest were a bit of a threat on the counter, but Spurs dealt with it well and look much more settled defensively today than in their first two games.

Lots of firepower for Spurs to call upon in the second half, with Mateus Fernandes, Mohammed Kudus, Mykhailo Mudryk and Dominic Solanke all on the bench.

Chances galore for both teams but Fulham are on top at the break.

That feels about right.

The Cottagers have created more chances and took the lead through Josh King.

But Palace recovered well and Tyrick Mitchell equalized for Pierre Sage’s side.

Cesar Palacios scored his first Fulham goal just before the break as his new team are ahead and looking for their first points of the season.

Palace are struggling.

Coventry City started well and have had some good chances, but Manchester City lead at the break.

Erling Haaland headed home Antoine Semenyo’s fine cross and could have had another.

Enzo Maresca’s Man City will look to get a second as soon as possible in the second half to put this result beyond doubt.

But Frank Lampard’s Coventry have been pesky so far and are a threat on the break and from set pieces.

Brighton have had so much of the ball but done so little with it, as sharpness is a major issue this half.

Leeds have turned 32% of the ball into 2.12xG and a 1-0 lead.

Erling Haaland is in and looks certain to score his second.

But Rushworth stands tall and Haaland hits his shot straight at him from close range as Coventry’s goalkeeper saves.

Somehow City are still 1-0 up. I think the whole stadium, and everyone watching everywhere around the world, expect Haaland to bury that.

Cesar Palacios has scored his first goal for Fulham and he has celebrated wildly.

Josh King surges into the box down the left and his cross is almost tapped home by Gonzalo Garcia at the near post.

The ball rebounds to Garcia’s fellow Real Madrid academy graduate Palacios who slots home.

2-1 to Fulham. What a game at the Cottage!

Eddie Nketiah does well to set up Tyrick Mitchell on the left side of the box.

The Palace left back still has plenty to do but he settles himself and then smashes home from a tight angle.

1-1 and Palace’s fans go wild.

England manager Thomas Tuchel is in the stands, and Mitchell will have done his hopes of getting a call up no harm at all with that.

Antoine Semenyo gets in down the right and clips over a brilliant cross to the back post.

Rushworth comes but is caught out.

Erling Haaland is there to power home a header into the empty net.

Man City ahead but Coventry have done okay so far and looked dangerous from set pieces. Let’s see how they respond to going behind.

He tees up the chance for himself and beats Rushworth, but the ball hits the post and comes back out.

Cherki can’t believe it. Great play from Fernandez.

Calvert-Lewin is sprung toward goal by a goofy bounce, and he rounds the keeper only to find himself denied by a sliding Lewis Dunk.

Ao Tanaka gets on the end of a flicked corner but it bounds off the top of the bar in the 24th minute.

A quick free kick catches Coventry out and Erling Haaland is in.

He smashes his shot on goal but it’s at a good height for Carl Rushworth who saves well.

After that bright start from Coventry, Man City are now starting to click through the gears.

Oh, it’s a mess at the box.

Brighton are protesting for offside as Dominic Calvert-Lewin was very close to being the wrong side of things.

A big cross is knocked down by DCL, and Ao Tanaka’s work gets the ball to the back post where Jayden Bogle is strong and quick enough to make it 1-0.

Yeremy Pino gets the ball on the left and sends in a delicious cross with the outside of his right foot.

It’s straight to Kamada who finishes sharply to make it 1-1... but hang on.

VAR is checking and Kamada was just offside.

No goal. Pierre Sage can’t believe it. It feels like everything is going against him and his team right now.

Sunderland thought they had opened the scoring in the 7th minute as they bullied the Bees in the box. Eventually the ball fell to Daniel Ballard and he lashed it home, but upon video review, debutant Kevin Danso obstructed Caoimhin Kelleher’s view from an offside position and it won’t count.

The Seagulls are holding almost 70% of the ball but Leeds are keeping the ball away from the danger areas.

In fact, Leeds have the only two touches in the opposition’s boxes.

Fulham are ahead against Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.

Axel Disasi with a bad mistake and Shea Charles drives down the right flank.

The cross comes in finds Josh King. He takes a couple of touches and his shot deflects past Dean Henderson and in.

Alvaro Arbeloa punches the air in delight. Perfect start for Fulham. Terrible start for Crystal Palace.

Frank Lampard’s Coventry City should be ahead at Man City.

First, a pass back from Khusanov to Donnarumma sees him closed down on his goalline and he almost lets the ball go over the line for an own goal. So close to a calamitous moment.

Moments later one pass slices through Man City’s defense and Awoniyi is in.

Donnarumma does well to stay tall and Awoniyi slots the ball past him, but also past the post. Golden chance for Coventry to take a shock lead.

Man City are looking very shaky.

Enzo Fernandez has replaced Nico O’Reilly in the starting lineup for Manchester City and will make his debut.

O’Reilly was due to start in central midfield but City have been forced to make a chance just before kick off, with the England international injured in the warm-up.

That means new $169 million new signing Fernandez comes in to start.

A fair result. Bournemouth dominated the first half but Newcastle seized the game in the second half.

Newcastle move onto five points, level with fifth-place Liverpool before a host of teams play Saturday and Sunday.

Bournemouth grab a second point in as many weeks, good for 14th.

St. James’ Park could see more late drama as a minimum of six minutes will be added to the clock.

Newcastle are in the ascendancy at the moment having drawn level at 2.

Both teams make 90th minute subs, with Ben Gannon-Doak and Valentino Livramento into the game.

An intriguing clash in west London as ninth hosts seventh from last season.

Both teams will be hoping of another push for European qualification again, with Thiago, Schade and Ouattara key in attack for Brentford and that trio starts today.

Sunderland have new signing Kevin Danso straight in at center back as it looks like a 3-4-3 system.

It looks like Elliot Anderson and Nico O’Reilly start in the center midfield.

Much better from Newcastle, and now danger!

Wissa’s cross from the right is flicked across goal by Elanga, and Willock’s header drifts wide of the far post.

Newcastle still finding Bournemouth’s set-up a congested one, but they have more possession now and look sharper with the ball.

Matthias Jaissle declines to make any personnel changes, though surely there will be a tactical tweak or two as the Magpies aim for an equalizer, down 2-1 to the Cherries.

The Magpies looked better toward halftime but Bournemouth’s lead is still very much a deserved one.

Adams, Scott, and Tavernier have been very god for the Cherries, while Newcastle’s star is undoubtedly Hornicek (with apologies to Barnes for his scintillating goal).

The Magpies back line and midfield are struggling to get the ball to anyone but Elanga and Barnes in extreme areas where Bournemouth are quick to double-team the ball.

Yoane Wissa has been a passenger with the game’s joint-fewest touches (Kluivert, 15), a credit to their center mids as well as back Antonio Silva and James Hill.

The archer’s sent in a bullseye to the upper 90.

Barnes finally gets a 1v1 opportunity, cuts onto his right foot and hits a sensational ball across goal which splashes the side netting.

Scott deserves to be on the score sheet but Newcastle are an absolute mess.

Dedic loses the ball on the left and Kluivert gets the ball from Tavernier, lashing it off the far post.

The ball hits the back of Hornicek and bounces out wide. Crossed back in, it turns off of Malick Thiaw and is an own goal for 2-0.

Tavernier could have a hat trick as Newcastle continue to give the ball away in their own half.

Adams has been fantastic after taking the place of Lewis Cook in the Bournemouth XI, perhaps no surprise that a Red Bull product is thriving for Marco Rose.

The Cherries win a couple of corners after the half-hour mark, playing the second short only to see it blocked by Willock.

Marco Rose’s press has been hungry, with Tyler Adams and Alex Scott making the midfield a no-go zone.

There are often two players to the ball before a supporting player arrives for Newcastle, who are giving the ball away with some loose passes, too.

Alex Scott’s shot takeds a wicked deflection and Tavernier reads it before Amar Dedic, knifing the ball inside of Hornicek and the keeper’s right post.

Lewis Miley’s dangling leg allows Justin Kluivert to hit the deck outside the 18 in a central position.

Bournemouth’s Marcus Tavernier, a former Newcastle and Middlesbrough youth player, beats the wall low but cannot fool Lukas Hornicek.

Newcastle are in their black and white stripes while Bournemouth dress in purple.

Marco Rose’s Cherries are building with three at the back.

Newcastle’s press has already delivered a couple of anticipatory roars from SJP through Anthony Elanga.

Both Newcastle and Bournemouth have exciting new players on the bench.

The Magpies opted against a starting role for playmaker Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who joins Aladji Bamba, Bazoumana Traore, and Sean Steur in waiting for introductions.

Bournemouth keep Juanlu Sanchez and keeper Michele Di Gregorio stays on the bench, too. The Cherries are still without Eli Junior Kroupi and Amine Adli.

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle has decided to keep the same starting lineup which won at Spurs last weekend. To me, that seems like a very smart decision.

Newcastle have got four points from games against Liverpool and Spurs to start the season and it was so nearly six. Overall, their intense style of football suits their team well and they look a real threat on the counter as the likes of Nico Gonzalez will play the ball forward as early and often as possible to Elanga, Wissa and Barnes.

Bournemouth’s new manager Marco Rose has seen his side lead in both of their opening two Premier League games heading into the final minutes, but somehow they’ve only got one point on the board so far.

He makes just one change from the team which drew with Everton last weekend, with USMNT star Tyler Adams coming in to start in midfield. That front four will cause problems, while Alex Scott has been superb in midfield and scored a beauty last weekend.

Up to three Americans could feature when Antonee Robinson’s Fulham get a visit from Chris Richards, Zavier Gozo, and Crystal Palace.

Brighton and Leeds both hunt their second wins of the young season.

A Friday night kickoff saw Andoni Iraola get his first Premier League win as Liverpool boss.

Cody Gakpo set up two Alexander Isak goals as Liverpool beat Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road.

Here’s what Iraola had to say after the clean sheet win, which saw Bradley Barcola make his PL debut.
