Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds United: Stach’s surgical free kick the difference

Two teams expected to compete for the same goals this season looked awfully equal, but it was a moment of magic from Anton Stach that provided Leeds United a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Stach and his Forest playmaking counterpart Morgan Gibbs-White were the string pullers, while James McAtee also impressed for the Tricky Trees and American forward Brenden Aaronson had a few very nice moments for Leeds after signing a new deal with the West Yorkshire club.

Jaka Bijol’s performance stands out with 11 defensive contributions and seven line-breaking passes (according to Fotmob). James Trafford had three saves in his clean sheet on debut for Leeds.

Ipswich 2-1 Sunderland: Tractor Boys make winning return to Premier League

What a day of results in the Premier League relegation race.

First, Hull City shock Manchester United with a 2-0 victory at home, and now we’ve seen Ipswich snatch three points against Sunderland thanks to a late winner from Jack Clarke, who previously played for the Black Cats from 2021 to 2024.

22-year-old Brazilian forward Emersonn scored the opening goal on his debut after Julio Enciso won the ball and dribbled 60 yards before teeing up a sitter in the 24th minute, but Sunderland were level after Nilson Angulo smashed a free kick off the underside of the crossbar in the 39th.

1-1 looked a fair result for a long time in the second half, until Ipswich made a sweeping move through midfield and found Clarke cutting in from the left wing.

Full time — Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace

It’s full time on Merseyside and Everton have beaten Crystal Palace 2-0.

David Moyes’ side deserved that win.

They were more clinical when it mattered and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall scored a beauty before the break and Thierno Barry sealed the win with a header in the second half and they came close on multiple occasions to scoring a third.

Crystal Palace hit the post twice in the first half and missed some big chances, as Pierre Sage tasted defeat in his first game in charge of the Eagles.

But they still played pretty well and won’t be too disheartened. Although a serious looking knee injury to Chadi Riad is a big blow for them at the back.

Everton are up and running for the season and Moyes must fancy their chances of pushing for a European spot once again.

GOAL! Ipswich 2-1 Sunderland: Jack Clarke scores the late winner against his former club (90')

What a move by Ipswich and what a moment at Portman Road. The Tractor Boys are back in the top flight and they look ready for a long, long fight to stay there.

Brennan Johnson has looked very sharp

Brennan Johnson, who joined Everton from Crystal Palace in a rare swap deal this summer with Dwight McNeil heading the other day, is looking bright.

Johnson came on for his competitive Everton debut and has been a real threat on the right wing.

He is stretching Palace, making good runs and holding the ball up well.

Johnson is such a talent but lost his way at Palace. Maybe this move to Everton is exactly what he needed?

Full time — Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds United

It was going to take something special — a fine strike or a mistake — to separate to even teams.

Some Forest fans will say Matz Sels should’ve done better, but Anton Stach’s free kick sure was a fine strike — a precision effort from an unlikely ankle.

Leeds get three nice points away from home while Oliver Glasner’s Forest debut is one to forget.

GOAL! Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds: Anton Stach

A free kick from some distance finally solves Matz Sels.

Of course it’s Anton Stach, as the German swerves a vicious near post free kick around a two-man wall.

Sels gets a glove to it but only moves it inside his near post.

1-0, 88'

Chadi Riad is stretchered off the pitch with an injury

After colliding with Thierno Barry in the box, Chadi Riad has been down receiving treatment and we’ve had a lengthy delay at Everton.

Riad looks to have suffered a knee injury as he twisted awkwardly on it.

The Moroccan international is visibly upset as he’s carried off the pitch on a stretcher and this doesn’t look good for him and Palace.

New signing Takehiro Tomiyasu is on in Riad’s place.

Sels denies Muharemovic dream Leeds’ debut

A big cross to the back post and Bosnian center back Tarik Muharemovic gets up to turn a header toward goal.

Sels is airborne and has to reach to paw the ball just wide of the post. That would’ve been some moment for Leeds.

Instead it remains 0-0 at Forest.

Glorious chance for Chris Wood!

Barely into the game for Dan Ndoye, Forest forward Chris Wood bursts between two Leeds defenders to meet Murillo’s gorgeous through ball.

He snaps onto a low shot but it’s always spinning wide of the near post.

Leeds respond with a sub, removing Harry Wilson for Noah Okafor.

0-0, 67'

Everton close to a third goal!

The Toffees are buzzing all over the pitch and Palace can’t contain them.

Barry clips a cross to the middle of the goal and Ndiaye is there waiting.

His volley bounces into the ground and on target, but Henderson pushes it away.

The home fans are loving this performance today.

GOAL! Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace - Barry heads home!

Hayden Hackney plays a free kick quickly down the right to Iliman Ndiaye and he whips in a brilliant cross right on the head of Thierno Barry.

He can’t really miss this as he heads the ball towards goal and it flicks off Chris Richards and goes in.

Everton 2-0 up and that was class from Ndiaye.

The TV cameras pan to the stands and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, a huge Everton fan, is loving it.

Igor Jesus nods wide!

Ola Aina gets clever to create space and a 1-2 on the right, then sends a high invitation to Trafford’s back post.

Igor Jesus rises to head it down but can’t turn it inside the back post from a tight angle.

0-0, 57'

Brenden Aaronson lets it fly as Forest-Leeds remains 0-0

Leeds come out of halftime with intent.

Harry Wilson hits a big switch to Brenden Aaronson and the USMNT forward cuts in from the left side.

On the edge of the 18 he drives a shot across goal but Forest keeper Matz Sels stoops and keeps hold of it.

Everton 1-0 Crystal Palace in a wide-open game

Quite how this is only 1-0 is beyond me!

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall smashed home a beauty before the break to put Everton ahead but Palace should have been 2-0 up by that point.

Jordan Pickford denied Eddie Nketiah superbly to tip his shot onto the post, while Mateta also hit the post when he should have scored and Palace have missed some big chances.

Everton have had a couple of great looks too and this is a brilliant wide-open game.

It will intriguing to see what David Moyes does to try and shore things up, while new Palace boss Pierre Sage won’t be too upset with what he’s seen from his side despite them being behind at the break.

Halftime — Nottingham Forest 0-0 Leeds United

This is very even, although Forest had a 10-minute period that flexed a bit more than any Leeds stretch.

Possession is 51% to Forest, while xG favors the Tricky Trees 0.19-0.18 and shot attempts are 5-4 to the hosts.

Chris Wood, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and new signing Xavier Schlager are on the bench for Forest, while Leeds can introduce Lukas Nmecha, Noah Okafor, and Ao Tanaka amongst others.

Should make for an intriguing second 45 at the City Ground.

GOAL! Everton 1-0 Crystal Palace: Dewsbury-Hall smashes home

Everton lead and that was coming.

First Thierno Barry couldn’t sort his feet out when he was in, but Everton kept the pressure on.

Youngster Harrison Armstrong won the ball back in a great area and fed Dewsbury-Hall who smashes the ball across goal and into the far corner.

Excellent finish and Everton are ahead, despite Palace having a couple of great chances so far.

Forest do everything but score!

James Trafford is finding life a bit busy.

More chaos near the six-yard box and this one includes a cleared VAR check for a push.

The only way through has been over, so far, as both teams are standing stout through the middle.

Who can find the cross and final ball first?

Forest 0-0 Leeds into the 42nd minute.

GOAL! Ipswich 1-1 Sunderland: Nilson Angulo pings a free kick off the underside of the bar (39')

6-foot-9 goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen couldn’t get near it. That takes some doing, and Nilson Angulo did it.

Mateta hits the post for Palace at Everton

Crystal Palace hit the frame of the goal for the second time in this game.

This time Eddie Nketiah is played in down the left side of the box and his cross to Mateta at the back post is perfect.

The French forward looks certain to slot home and he beats Pickford from close range, but his shot hits the post and comes back out.

Palace can’t believe it. Everton’s goal is living a charmed life at the moment. Somehow, it’s still 0-0 here.

GOAL! Ipswich 1-0 Sunderland: Emersonn scoops it home after Enciso sets him up (24')

Julio Enciso did brilliantly well to win the ball and carry it from inside his own half, and put it on a platter for Emersonn to score on his debut. The 22-year-old Brazilian forward was signed from French side Toulouse for $35 million this summer.

Harry Wilson scores.... but offside

Is it a goal if it never counted? Can we say he scored if it never hit the scoreboard?

Anyway, Jayden Bogle and Brenden Aaronson do good work and Bogle’s cross could’ve been put home by new signing Harry Wilson or Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Wilson’s the one who turns it past Sels, but the flag is up and VAR confirms the decision. 0-0, now into the 28th minute.

James Trafford makes big save, Forest challenge gets VAR review

Igor Jesus flies to the back of a scrum to head a cross on goal an Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford makes a fine save.

That moment is soon overshadowed as Ola Aina goes through the legs of James Justin and catches the Leeds man with his studs.

A yellow card is shown but Justin is writhing on the pitch and VAR have a long look before deciding the caution is fine.

What a save by Pickford to deny Nketiah!

A lovely ball over the top from Adam Wharton finds Eddie Nketiah and he’s clean through.

Nketiah take a great touch and curls a beauty towards the far post and it’s going in, but Jordan Pickford gets a great touch on the ball and it hits the post.

Nketiah can’t believe it. That is a sensational save.

Very lively between Everton and Palace

A couple of chances at both ends and this game has been very entertaining so far.

At one end Daniel Munoz has a volley on goal which Pickford saves easily.

At the other end Merlin Rohl is played in and tees up Iliman Ndiaye but the ball just gets stuck under his feet.

He takes a touch and digs out an effort but Dean Henderson saves fairly easily.

Everton 0-0 Crystal Palace: Big chance for Mateta

A clearance up the pitch is not dealt with well by Everton’s defense.

Eddie Nketiah is all over it and gets on the ball in the box.

His pass to the near post is close to Mateta and he prods the ball towards goal but it flies over.

That was a great chance for Palace to get off to a flying start. Mateta probably should have buried that.

Forest, Leeds bright and underway

I mean bright in two different ways, as Leeds’ yellow tops are joining the heavy Garibaldi Red of the City Ground in delivering good aesthetics.

But Daniel Farke’s Leeds always have energy as they fire forward out of the gates to force a little concern in the Forest box, collected by Matz Sels.

Oliver Glasner has the Tricky Trees ready to hunt possession, too. A nice first few minutes at Forest, where it’s 0-0.

Ipswich Town vs Sunderland team news

Ipswich Town are back in the Premier League after just one season in the Championship, hoping to emulate one of last season’s promoted sides, Sunderland.

MOREWatch live on Peacock

The Black Cats had been away from the top flight since 2017, but Regis Le Bris’ side looked like they belonged from the word go. They finished 7th and will be competing in the Europa League this season.

So, maybe Ipswich won’t be targeting European qualification, because Sunderland certainly weren’t either, but they will hope that the experience of two seasons ago has hardened the club and will give them that little something extra that they need this time around.

Ipswich starting lineup

Scherpen - O’Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis - Nuñuez, Lukic, Enciso - Fatawu, Maeda, Emersonn

Sunderland starting lineup

Roefs - Meunier, Ballard, O’Nien, Reinildo - Xhaka, Sadiki, Le Fee - Hume, Angulo, Brobbey

Nottingham Forest vs Leeds team news, stream link

USMNT forward Brenden Aaronson is fresh off signing a new three-year contract with Leeds and he’ll start as they kick off their Premier League season at Nottingham Forest for a 10am ET kickoff.

MORE — Watch live on Peacock

For Forest, they’ve held onto Morgan Gibbs-White but begin life without Elliot Anderson. New boss Oliver Glasner is Premier League proven but the Forest head gig is one of the least safe in sports.

Leeds starting lineup

Trafford, Bogle, Justin, Muharemovic, Rodon, Bijol, Ampadu, Stach, Wilson, Aaronson, Calvert-Lewin

Nottingham Forest starting lineup

Sels, Aina, Milenkovic, Murillo, Williams, Sangare, McAtee, Ndoye, Gibbs-White, Cunha, Igor Jesus

Everton vs Crystal Palace team news

David Moyes’ Everton welcome Pierre Sage’s Crystal Palace to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, and both will be eyeing European qualification this season.

MOREWatch online via USA

Everton came close to it last season under Moyes, while Palace are in the Europa League after they won the Conference League last season.

Moyes has a new look to his midfield with Hayden Hackney making his Premier League debut after his summer arrival from Middlesbrough, while Harrison Armstrong is in there with him and Tyrique George gets the nod out on the left with a youthful look about the team.

Sage has come in as manager to replace Oliver Glasner for the Eagles and he’s battling to keep his best players at Selhurst Park with Ismaila Sarr not in the squad amid links of a move to Galatasaray and rumors swirling about Adam Wharton’s future. Dwight McNeil starts against his former club, while Nketiah starts in support of Mateta.

Everton starting lineup

Pickford; Rohl, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Armstrong, Hackney; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, George; Barry

Crystal Palace starting lineup

Henderson; Canvot, Richards, Riad; Munoz, Kamada, Wharton, Mitchell; Nketiah, McNeil; Mateta

SAVE! Tzolakis denies Mbeumo again, this time on a blistering counter-attack (78')

Hull have done a real job here in the second half, limiting Man United to a few long-range chances and throwing their bodies in the way of everything else. Bryan Mbeumo had a rare 1-on-1 look at goal as he raced in behind to receive Matheus Cunha’s through ball, but Konstantinos Tzolakis made a fine diving stop to keep it 2-0.

Marcus Rashford replaces Patrick Dorgu out of halftime

Marcus Rashford had a successful season at Barcelona (8 goals, 7 assists in La Liga), but they chose not to make his loan permanent this summer, so now he’s back at Man United and set to enter the season opener out of halftime with the Red Devils 2-0 down to newly promoted Hull.

Halftime stats: Hull City vs Manchester United

Possession: 29-71
Shots: 5-8
On target: 4-2
xG: 1.16-0.71
Passes: 87-286

HALFTIME! Hull lead Manchester United 2-0 at the break

Hull have had just 29 percent of possession in that first half, yet they managed to put four shots on target and found the back of the net twice. They look smartly set up with five across the back and an experienced big man in Oli McBurnie up top. Their wide players are fantastic crossers of the ball, they create chances and take shots from close range (three of five from inside the six), and work really hard.

GOAL! Hull 2-0 Man United: They’ve done it again, another fantastic set piece (38')

Hull City are in dreamland! Regan Slater whipped a delightful free kick to the back post and all Nobel Mendy had to do was redirect its pace and power past Lammens to double the lead. Man United have been good in possession but a bit lazy without the ball, especially on set pieces.

Mendy heads Hull City 2-0 in front of Man United
It's an unbelievable start to the season for newly-promoted Hull City as Nobel Mendy powers his side 2-0 ahead of Manchester United at MKM Stadium.

GOAL! Hull 1-0 Man United: Semi Ajayi puts the Tigers ahead (17')

Well, so much for that strong start from Man United. Hull are ahead after a corner kick. It was nodded on from the near post to Mc Burnie at the back, but his shot was well saved off the goal line by Lammens. It fell inside the six-yard box, though, and Semi Ajayi slammed it into the back of the net. What an atmosphere inside MKM Stadium!

Ajayi stuns Man United to give Hull City lead
It's a dream start for the Tigers in their return to the Premier League as Semi Ajayi smashes in his effort from close range to send MKM Stadium into hysterics.

SAVES! Tzolakis, Lammens make big stops and this game is nicely open (15')

Konstantinos Tzolakis made a big save to deny Bryan Mbeumo after Luke Shaw’s cross found its way to him at the back post, but Senne Lammens made an even better stop when Oli McBurnie got on the end of Ryan Giles’ cross. Both sides are pressing, forcing errors and finding scoring chances from them.

Youri Tielemans already making an impact for Man United (3')

We’re three minutes into the new season, and Youri Tielemans already looks a perfect pickup for Manchester United. He just clipped a brilliant ball over Hull’s defense and found Bruno Fernandes making clever run in behind. Bruno (probably) won’t have 21 assists again, but he’s going to score a fair few more goals with Tielemans around.

Hull City lineup confirmed

Hull are going with a 5-4-1 formation which is all based on counter-attacking quickly when they get chances to do so.

Sergej Jakirovic has this team very well-organized and even though he’s made plenty of new signings this summer, plenty of the players starting against United were key in getting Hull unexpectedly promoted last season.

Watch out for Belloumi on the right, while McBurnie is a proper handful up top and will make the most of minimal clear-cut chances.

Hull City starting lineup

Tzolakis; Coyle, Ajayi, Egan, Mendy, Giles; Belloumi, Crooks, Slater, Stroud; McBurnie

Manchester United lineup confirmed

This starting lineup from United is pretty strong, and they are only a couple of players away from what is probably their strongest XI.

New signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos start together in midfield.

Both Lisandro Martinez and Benjamin Sesko are on the bench, while Carlos Baleba’s impending arrival will likely see him start in place of Santos in the future.

The bench is looking really strong with Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee all on it.

Anyway, a pretty good and settled XI from United.

Manchester United starting lineup

Lammens; Mazraoui, Heaven, Maguire, Shaw; Santos, Tielemans; Dorgu, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo

What can we expect from new boys Hull City?

Hull City were relegation candidates at the start of last season in the Championship.

Now they’re in the Premier League.

Sergej Jakirovic has done a sensational job to bring the Tigers back up to the top-flight for the first time since 2017 and they are playing with house money.

Ollie McBurnie is their main threat in attack, while they will sit deep, soak up pressure and look to hit teams on the counter and whip in plenty of crosses.

Hull are an extremely well-organized team and know what they are good at.

They also know they’re in the Premier League unexpectedly and sometimes when the pressure is off, special things can happen.

Hull are the favorites to go down but the Tigers are certainly up for the fight to prove everyone wrong.

Can Manchester United kick on under Carrick?

All eyes will be on Manchester United today as Michael Carrick takes his side to newly-promoted Hull City and everyone expects them to win big to start the season on a positive note.

United finished third last season as Carrick turned them around and took them back to the Champions League as interim boss.

He now has the job on a full-time basis and Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have been key additions in midfield, while Carlos Baleba is on his way too.

United will have a tough time juggling the Premier League with Champions League action and the likes of Chelsea and Spurs don’t have that concern this season, which could work against the Red Devils.

But everyone expects United to kick on under Carrick and for them to finish in the top four, at the very least.

Maybe, just maybe, they could be in the title race if everything goes their way and a few big boys around them stumble.

A lot would have to happen for that to be the case, and Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha would have to score a lot of goals.

Whatever happens, after a tough few years expectation levels at United are back up to where they should be.
