If you turned away from AS Roma versus Real Madrid at either of two points this afternoon, you were likely very surprised by the final score.
It was 1-1 in the second half when Roma got a pair of Donyell Malen goals six minutes a part.
So, of course, Roma would surely get at least a point with 2-goal lead in the 57th minute, right?
Nope, Espi in the 82nd minute. Endrick in the 85th. Antonio Rudiger in the 90th.

Haaland’s fourth goal in two Champions League appearance pulls Man City within two goals of PSG though surely it’s far too late.
Tammy Abraham strikes very late to give Villa its sixth goal in a demolition of Fenerbahce. Villa Park is euphoric.
Roma have struck thrice since Mbappe put Real Madrid ahead, as Serie A leading goalsman Donyell Malen has two on a day his former club Villa are flying back in England.
Porto came back from 1-0 down to lead Real Betis in Spain through Gabriel Veiga and Samu Aghehowa, but Betis’ Cucho Hernandez — formerly of Columbus Crew — has it 2-2 in the second half.
Ousmane Dembele now adds an assist to his ledger, cueing up Maghnes Akliouche for PSG’s fourth and in all likelihood killing off hosts Man City.
Villa bag two goals in four minutes, one a penalty and the other from the run of play as Ross Barkley has two goals and assist.
Barkley doing that in the UCL is something he probably expected years ago whenhe moved from Everton to Chelsea. The 32-year-old did not account for a goal contribution in six UCL appearances for the Blues across 2019-20 and 2022-23.
It had to be him, and Man City are within two goals against champions PSG.
Iliman Ndiaye was a second-half sub and his spun cross and turned into the goal yb the head of Erling Haaland.
3-1, 53'.
Real recognize Real, as they say (just with more syllables).
Kylian Mbappe’s 72nd Champions League goal breaks a tie with Real Madrid legend Raul for the fifth-most goals in UCL history.
They’re level with AS Roma after 45 minutes.

Nicolas Jackson makes it three Champions League goals in two appearances for Villa.
Matty Cash steals the ball and finds Jackson, who gives the ball to Ross Barkley.
He gets it back and lashes past Ederson, and it’s 3-0!
Not a great night for Ederson or his former club Man City.

The two-time defending champions are absolutely flying at the Etihad Stadium.
This time it’s ex-Wolves man Vitinha who beats Donnarumma.
It’s simple stuff as PSG gets numbers into the 18 for a cutback that eludes Enzo Fernandez.
It’s 2-0 as Boubacar Kamara cues up a Nicolas Jackson goal for Aston Villa.
The 25-year-old forward also scored in Villa’s 3-2 tournament-opening win at Club Brugge.
He scored three in the competition for Bayern Munich on loan from Chelsea last season.
As planned, Man City boss Pep Guardiola is in the house for this first home match since the announcement of City’s guilty verdict.

Luis Enrique’s men are sending a message in Manchester.
Ousmane Dembele sends a gorgeous chipped cross across the 18, ad Doue sends it right back to the other flank.
Dembele snaps it home in a gorgeous second goal for two goals in about as many minutes.
City have it all to do, as they say.

Désiré Doué with the goal and the assist 🔥 pic.twitter.com/OKjsesexlN
PSG strike first against their old teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Etihad.
Les Parisiens break with great speed and Doue gets the ball a half-dozen or so yards outside the 18.
He tries his luck with a low shot across his body, dragging it inside the near post for 1-0 in the 13th minute.
The Swiss star of the World Cup continues his rise with a goal against Turkish powers Fenerbahce.
Yohan Manzambi turns 21 today and he’s celebrating with his first UEFA Champions League goal (and second since moving to Villa this summer).
Manzambi scored twice in Freiburg’s run to the Europa League Final last season, where they fell to Villa in — ironically — Besiktas Park in Turkiye.
The ball takes a big deflection but should remain property of Manzambi.
LASK Linz 3-6 Liverpool: Barcola’s hat trick leads the way for Liverpool in a 6-3 win at LASK Linz. Also scoring for the Reds were Ronald Araujo, Jeremie Frimpong, and Lewis Koumas.
Frimpong and Kostas Tsimikas each had two assists, with Florian Wirtz also setting up a goal. LASK left back Yvan Dibango set up all of the Austrian goals as Florian Flecker scored twice and Robert Ljubicic also notched one.
Feyenoord 3-2 Como: The visitors struck first through young Assane Diao, but Feyenoord scored three-straight goals and held on for the win.
Gjivai Zechiel and Anis Hadj Moussa put Feyenoord ahead 2-1 and an own goal gave them a necessary cushion to withstand Anastasios Douvikas’ stoppage-time goal.
Liverpool built a 6-1 lead in Austria with three goals coming from Barcola, but the hosts have bagged two goals in five second-half minutes to provide a pretty audacious 6-3 score line.
