Ciao, Giorgio: tributes and historical context roll in

Chinaglia 1

The facts, figures and hard dates are here on the day after North American Soccer League legend Giorgio Chinaglia died at age 65.

MLSSoccer.com’s Greg Lalas offers up a smart piece on Chinaglia and his N.A.S.L. kind, and the important place they occupy in domestic soccer history. Major League Soccer may distain certain, destructive parts of the N.A.S.L. legacy, but it doesn’t change this fact: that was a glorious time in its own way, and for better or worse that history was always a shaping element for soccer in the States.

Or more directly to Lalas point: there is genuine soccer history in the United States. Some of it rich as sweet cream.

And this wonderful set of retro Chinaglia photos is up at Who Ate All the Pies.
