Courtois has concussion but is otherwise ok after challenge


Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was taken to a hospital as a precaution following his first-half removal from the 2-0 Chelsea win over Arsenal, but is doing fine.

The 22-year-old’s father confirmed to Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur that he has a concussion but is otherwise doing fine, and tests were clear.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho also confirmed that initial report.

Courtois clattered with the midsection of Alexis Sanchez as both vied for a ball in the penalty area, and despite laying motionless and woozy on the ground, was initially left on before coming off 20 minutes later with his ear bleeding.

It has yet again brought into question soccer’s handling of head injuries, as even with a new Premier League standard to bring players suspected of a concussion off the pitch, he remained on for a significant amount of time.
