Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was left puzzled over the decision of his club’s fans to whistle at Cristiano Ronaldo during Los Blancos 5-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

“We need the help of everyone. Whistling Cristiano is incomprehensible,” Ancelotti said.

“I have always said that sometimes I understand whistles because they can be deserved.

Right now? No, the players are putting in a lot of effort.”

For Ronaldo, his efforts against Vallecano began by opening the scoring with his 28th league goal of the season, his 44th in all competitions. The strike was the Ballon d’Or winner’s 10th in his past eight games, helping preserve his status as top scorer in La Liga, three ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa and five more than Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

The jeers, which were also directed at Gareth Bale until his brace pacified the crowd, were the result of a frustrating two week period for Madrid fans who saw their side discard their race in La Liga after loses to Barcelona and Sevilla. Three points adrift of Atletico and two points behind Barcelona, winning out the season won’t be enough to bring Madrid the title but, in what has been a topsy-turvy La Liga season, anything can happen.

Plus Madrid are well positioned for a chance to win the Copa del Rey, where they play Barcelona in the final on April 16th, and the Champions League, where they face Borussia Dortmund in a two-legged quarter-final on April 2nd and 8th.
