The post-whistle chaos that marred the end of Argentina’s World Cup Final loss to Spain this summer will have big implications for both sides, specifically the runners-up.
Argentine players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada plus team official Roberto Ayala have been suspended and fined, while Spain’s Gavi also has been punished by FIFA.

The final whistle had just blown in New Jersey when Paredes grabbed Eric Garcia’s throat and threw Gavi to the ground. FIFA charged Paredes with assault.
Paredes has been suspended 10 matches and fined $90,000, while Molina will miss seven games and faces the same fine.
Ayala is suspended three games, while Almada and Gavi will both miss a game. All three were fined $30,000.
FIFA have also punished Argentina’s FA, putting their next two men’s home games at a 50% attendance ban and fining the CONMEBOL member $321,000 for “breaches of articles 13 paragraph 2 c) (Using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature), 14 paragraph 5 (Team misconduct), 15 (Discrimination and racist abuse) in light of discriminatory chants and gestures by its supporters, and 17 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).”
