Game called off due to …. waterlogged field?

Rain in Sunderland

In England this morning, the Barclay’s Premier League match featuring Sunderland and recently promoted Reading has been called off due to … a waterlogged field?

What is this, 1982? Is there also fear of hooligan-led trouble around the ground, another troubling relic that we suspected had been reduced to a bad memory from bygone era?

Actually, matches can and do get scrubbed these days, even in the big league like England’s. But it’s usually due to snow or perhaps, at some of the lesser moneyed clubs, frozen grounds.

But rain? In August? Yes, a bit of a strange one. Especially consider that the Stadium of Light in Sunderland is among the more modern grounds, having opened in 1997.

But rain has been falling all day in, apparently, in the country’s northeast reaches.
