None of us really know what Simon Fuller and 19 Entertainment are cooking up for David Beckham, and what kind of future goodies they might be considering as the Galaxy man plots his next move.
In terms of expanding the Beckham brand, a stint in Australia or Asia makes more sense. But if we’re talking about rounding out one of the most famous athletic careers the world has ever seen, completing the circle with a final professional flourish in England sounds like a splendid final chapter, doesn’t it?
Sunday, that became a little bit more of a possibility when new Queen’s Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp, who takes over this week at Loftus Road in West London, set the table with comments made Sunday to BBC Radio Five Live.“I’m sure he could still play in the Premier League. … He is a top player and a fantastic person. We had him at Tottenham training and he was amazing around the place, absolute class.
“I haven’t discussed it with the chairman [Tony Fernandes] at the moment so we’d have to look at that but David could still certainly be a great asset to anybody, showing people how to train, how to look after yourself.
“His professionalism is second to none.”
The spell at Tottenham mentioned was back in January of 2011, when Redknapp attempted to sign Beckham on loan. Unable to sort out the terms, Beckham trained in London for a month instead of joining on a loan assignment.
QPR spent lavishly in the summer transfer window as Fernandes signed off on pricey signings such as Julio Cesar, Jose Bosingwa, Park Ji-sung and Esteban Granero. It looks like a failed bit now as QPR sits bottom of the table today, without a single league victory.
So additional high-priced arrivals seem highly unlikely now at Loftus Road. That means something more creative may be required, something like a possible short-term Beckham deal, perhaps.
