Most major members of the U.S. national team’s foreign legion have something meaningful on the line Saturday or Sunday – even if that “something” is just bragging rights ahead of summer get-togethers.
That’s the case today at Goodison Park, for instance, where Tim Howard’s Everton hosts Clint Dempsey’s Fullham.
In Germany, Fabian Johnson’s Hoffenheim hosts Timmy Chandler’s Nuremberg. Both sides remain in the hunt for a Europa League berth. So does Steve Cherundolo’s Hannover, which travels to Bayer Leverkusen.
Jermaine Jones and Schalke can’t slip an inch or they’ll be passed for a Champions League berth. The full German table is here, and the full Bundesliga schedule is here.
Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar are in for a big one as they face Feyenoord on Sunday; the teams are tied for second now in Holland. Scorching-hot Altidore has five goals in AZ’s last four matches.
And finally, Alejandro Bedoya, Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu may be playing in their final Old Firm as Rangers meet Celtic. Given Rangers’ financial tumult, hard to say which of the Americans may be back in Glasgow this fall.
More detail on the Americans abroad and their big weekend encounters is here from U.S. Soccer.
