Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool will prove themselves champions come next season.

Liverpool dropped the opening match of their preseason 2-1 to Danish side Brondby.

A second-half stoppage time winner from Ferhan Hasani handed the hosts the match winner yet despite the loss, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was in good spirits claiming he could see the belief in his Reds side.

The first-half saw Brondby open the scoring through Christian Norgaard before Liverpool’s Kristoffer Peterson leveled the match three minutes into the second-half. Midfielder Jordan Ibe received the ball on the left wing, dribbled into the opposition box and picked out the 19-year-old Swede for a close-range finish. The second-half went scoreless with chances missed on both sides of the pitch before Hasani’s winner struck the net in stoppage time.

“It’s going to be a really exciting season,” Rodgers said after the match. “I’ve seen development in the players already in the short period of time that we’ve been back. This season we have the belief to go along with the quality.

“We want to improve and continually improve. We’re working very hard behind the scenes, as we always do, in terms of getting the best quality players into the club.”

The result came after eight days after Liverpool opened their training at Melwood before traveling to Denmark. The Reds will now gear up to face Preston North End on Saturday before heading to the United States to compete in the International Champions Cup.
