Liverpool may be third in the Premier League standings, but they’re still five points behind Arsenal, and dead even with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. It’s an improvement on the past few years, sure, but the Reds aren’t yet where they want to be. Dropping points against Swansea and Newcastle demonstrated the squad’s weaknesses, but it was last week’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal that really highlighted its deficiencies. With Champions League football the goal, Liverpool still must strive to be better.

Thus, it is unsurprising that Brendan Rodgers has spoke out about the club’s plans for the January transfer window. Last winter, Liverpool brought in Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, both of whom helped the side pull itself out of the doldrums and ultimately finish in seventh. But with the club aiming higher this season, Liverpool’s transfer dealings will be more focused: proven first team talent. Rodgers stated, ""We’ve got a squad and we’ve got enough cover but in the future the focus is on bringing in players that can come straight in and improve our team.”

No hints from Rodgers, however, about specific players Liverpool might try to woo in January. He did hint that the “proven talent” may not equate to “household name,” though, citing Coutinho as an example. Many in England may not have heard of the Brazilian when he came over from Internazionale, but Rodgers feels he is a top young player whose confidence allows him to play in any system.

So, Liverpool fans, don’t fret if you don’t see veteran Premier League players being linked with your club this winter. Rodgers has a plan, it seems, and he’s set on implementing it in such a way that lifts the Reds into the top spots.
