Michael Bradley is back in New York to have foot surgery

According to a release by Toronto FC, Michael Bradley is currently in New York to undergo foot surgery to correct a nerve problem.

“Michael Bradley is in New York for surgery tomorrow to correct a season-long nerve issue with his foot,” TFC said in a release to media.

It’s unclear whether the issue is related to foot surgery he had back in April, which the club called a simple “procedure” at the time.

If they are related, it’s something to watch going forward to see if the problem remains with Bradley through his career. It could be a significant hamper to his efforts at reaching the 2018 World Cup in Russia, although that’s jumping to conclusions with so little information available and that tournament so long away.

According to Kurtis Larson of the Toronto Sun, Bradley saw doctors twice last week before the final match of the MLS season against New England, but was able to play through the problem.

Toronto did not make the MLS playoffs, and their season is over. With news that Clint Dempsey is ready to make another offseason loan move to the Premier League, it was conceivable that Bradley could do the same given he has plenty of European experience, but it seems instead he will rest and recover.

The release from TFC also mentions that Jermain Defoe has returned to England to “seek further medical treatment” on his injured groin that saw the 32-year-old in and out of the squad down the home stretch of the regular season.
