I love some “stadium porn” as much as the next guy. That’s a slightly evocative social media term that essentially means stadium buffs like myself go all drool-mouth over pretty pictures of athletic facilities in the making.
Could be renderings. Or it could be images of a stadium under construction. Or those cool 3D “pick your seat” features as a venue prepares to come on-line.
Could even be a live stadium construction webcam. (Note to self: spend 15 minutes today staring at San Jose’s construction cam.)
D.C. United recently released its latest stadium renderings. They are wonderful. Of course they are.
But as much as I hate to be a buzz kill, here’s the reality:
Renderings are easy, not much more than a starting point to a starting point. Getting stadiums built is hard.
Point A (renderings) to Point X can take years and years and years, as we know. D.C. United has been here before, as most longtime MLS fans know.
Clearly, I’m not the only one who feels this way; Jason Davis at USSoccerPlayers.com calls renderings a “big tease” and further evidence of “American soccer’s tantalizing future.”
So, enjoy the great looks. (And they do always look fantastic, don’t they?) Go ahead and dream a little – nothing wrong with that. But then return to the pinch of hard reality: Stadiums for D.C. United, New York City FC and Miami remain long, uphill slogs.
