Enzo Fernandez is finally heading to Manchester City, as multiple reports claim a British record-equalling transfer fee of $169 million has been agreed with Chelsea on transfer deadline day.
Alexander Isak’s move from Newcastle United to Liverpool last summer set that record, and Fernandez’s move is set to equal it.
Per David Ornstein, Fabrizio Romano, Sky in Italy and Sky in Germany, Enzo Fernandez has now been given permission by Chelsea to travel to Manchester to complete his medical at Man City and sign his new contract.
The Argentina international, 25, has been linked with a move to City all summer and it looks to finally be happening.
What will Enzo Fernandez bring to Manchester City?
Fernandez will link up with his former boss at Chelsea, Enzo Maresca, and completes City’s massive overhaul of their midfield after they already spent $260 million on Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi this summer.
He is a fine individual player and City are constructing a totally different midfield — legends Rodri and Bernardo Silva left for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively this summer — as they aim to get back on track and win the Premier League this season.
Having Fernandez’s goals, assists and tenacity driving them forward from central midfield will certainly be a huge part of a new era at City. While Anderson’s poise on the ball and Bouaddi’s energy and ability to win the ball back will mesh so well with Fernandez’s main strengths.
In theory, City now have one of the best midfield trios in the game. And they should because it’s cost them $430 million this summer.
