Newcastle overcome injuries, smash Chelsea; Reece James sent off

Newcastle United gave Chelsea a day to forget at St. James’ Park, as the Magpies scored thrice before Reece James was sent off of a 4-1 Magpies win.

Alexander Isak, Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton, and Anthony Gordon all scored, with Gordon also recording an assist as the Magpies moved onto 23 points and sixth-place footing on the Premier League table.

The win is made more notable by the Magpies’ massive injury list ahead of this match and a midweek fight at Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League: Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Joe Willock, and Callum Wilson weren’t available amongst 10 regulars in the treatment room.

James picked up two yellow cards in the second half, the first for a petulant post-whistle kick of the ball, as Raheem Sterling’s terrific first-half free kick goal became a footnote by the end of the game.

The Blues were coming off a 4-4 draw with Manchester City that’s given the team even more faith in Mauricio Pochettino’s project. A win at a challenging venue could’ve sent their confidence over the brim, but the Blues instead stay on 16 points and remain 10th with Brentford and Wolves capable of passing them by the end of the weekend.

Injured Magpies show up, show out versus sleepy Chelsea

Raheem Sterling’s wonderful free kick goal aside, Chelsea was unfocused and unmotivated coming out of the international break.

Reece James’ poor pair of yellow cards were symbolic of greater problems within the 11 men on the field, as the Blues wasted a prime chance to feast against weary hosts by falling apart in the second half.

Yes, with Newcastle down to a bench with virtually no impact playmakers — and three goalkeepers — the Magpies thrived as the match wore on and seized all three points.

Eddie Howe will be right to preen. Who could’ve thought that a match against Chelsea would give him the opportunity to hand risk-free debuts to Alex Murphy, Amadou Diallo, and Michael Ndiweni after giving another start to 17-year-old Lewis Miley.

It’s a brilliant moment for Howe, and quite honestly nothing short of a setback for Mauricio Pochettino.

Anthony Gordon goal video:

When it rains, it pours for Chelsea, and it won’t feel good to see the final goal of this one coming from one of the Premier League’s top pests.

Gordon gives Newcastle 4-1 lead over Chelsea
Things go from bad to worse for 10-men Chelsea as Anthony Gordon tucks away the Magpies' fourth goal of the match at St. James' Park.

Reece James red card (video)

Really poor from Reece James.

Already on a yellow for kicking the ball away, Chelsea’s captain tries to juggle around Anthony Gordon.

The feisty Newcastle man wins the ball and takes off toward the 18, and James grabs him by the arm.

Gordon hits the deck, and Chelsea’s bad day gets worse.

James sent off for second yellow against Newcastle
Chelsea go down to 10 men after Reece James picks up his second yellow card of the match as Newcastle lead 3-1 at St. James' Park.

Chelsea triple sub

Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Conor Gallagher are off, as Mykhailo Mudryk, Armando Broja, and Moises Caicedo enter the fray.

Given that Newcastle’s bench is three keepers, four unfinished academy products, center back Paul Dummett, and aged vet Matt Ritchie, could Chelsea flip the script late?

Jamaal Lascelles goal! Joelinton goal!

The Magpies are back in front! And soon after they’ve doubled their lead!

It’s Jamaal Lascelles for the first one, as Anthony Gordon sweeps in a cross and Lascelles beats all of Chelsea’s sleepy back line to head inside the far post.

Soon after, Chelsea’s defense checks out again. This time it’s leader Thiago Silva, who basically lays it off for a charging Joelinton to snap past Robert Sanchez as if it was a designed training drill.

3-1, Newcastle. Scenes.

Lascelles powers Newcastle 2-1 in front of Chelsea
A beautiful cross is met by a towering header from Jamaal Lascelles, who gives Newcastle United a 2-1 lead over Chelsea at St. James' Park.
Joelinton stuns Chelsea to make it 3-1 for Magpies
Just seconds after conceding, Thiago Silva makes a critical error that allows an open path to goal for Joelinton, who tucks away Newcastle's third goal of the match against Chelsea at St. James' Park.

Newcastle vs Chelsea halftime analysis

This game has swung both ways, and neither side can complain at the level score line.

Newcastle has had more of the ball now, a surprise given the early moments, and has 1.03 xG to 0.53 for Chelsea.

Part of that’s down to Joelinton slipping while trying to plant a header home for 2-1, as both teams attempted six shots in the half.

Nick Pope has a big mistake and a big save, while his counterpart Robert Sanchez has only had to take 20 touches for Chelsea (zero saves yet).

All to play for, but you sense that Newcastle’s lack of depth is going to be a problem as the game rolls into the second half.

Raheem Sterling free kick goal video! Beautiful hit for equalizer

Nick Pope doesn’t try to get to Raheem Sterling’s free kick over the wall, and it’s led to a beautiful highlight reel goal.

But has the keeper played a big role in it? Sterling spun it with gorgeous accuracy over the wall, but behind the goal angles show that it’s not exactly upper 90 and Pope just watches it sail into the goal.

We’re even.

Sterling's splendid free kick gets Chelsea level
Raheem Sterling answers back for Chelsea with a sublime free kick that leaves Nick Pope watching to tie things up at St. James' Park.

Alexander Isak goal video: Swede puts Magpies ahead

There was a lot to like for Chelsea in the early stages, but it’s Newcastle in front!

The play starts on the right and makes its way to Lewis Miley centrally, the youngster spotting Alexander Isak.

The Swedish forward bags another goal as Marc Cucurella bets on an offside call that won’t come to his defense.

Isak lifts Newcastle United ahead of Chelsea
Alexander Isak marks his return from injury in style with a cool finish in front of goal to give the Magpies an early 1-0 lead over Chelsea at St. James' Park.
