Very good news has dropped out of Vancouver for anyone who wants to see what exciting, top draft choices can accomplish.

Well, it’s good news if you’re not a member of any other Western Conference defense.

Vancouver attacker Darren Mattocks, the No. 2 overall selection last January, has been cleared for full training after an accident in his own home left the rookie on injury shelf for six weeks.

I watched Mattocks perform in Arizona during preseason, and the University of Akron man has blazing speed to go with good instincts and ample skill. That’s why it was always neck-and-neck in most minds as to whether Mattocks or Andrew Wenger would go as the top 2012 pick.

But that accident, in his own kitchen, as he prepared a chicken dish from his native Jamaica, has been a setback.

Mattocks, 21, could return to the field as early as Wednesday, when the Whitecaps face Edmonton in a Canadian Championship match.

While you consider the clear and present danger of Jamaican chicken dishes, get yourself re-acquainted with Mattocks.
