ProSoccerTalk MLS Player of the Week: David Estrada
The privilege of choosing awards and honors should not be entrusted to the lazy or inattentive. On the one hand, none of this is life or death, and no harm will come from accolades poorly chosen.
Still, anything worth doing is worth doing right. Right? So Player of the Week, Man of the Match, Team of the Week … these things deserve due diligence. Right?
I know Timbers owner Merritt Paulson agrees. He poked the Twitter bear this very day, lamenting any clumsily chosen Man of the Match awards. My personal nitpick: selected media brethren, who spend an evening chatting, checking scores or hammering away at the buffet … barely noticing a match in progress. Then they look at their ballot for Man of the Match or MVP or whatever. “So, uh, who scored?” Nice.
All that said … no need to overthink things. Sometimes the answers are obvious.
When a young backup, making his seventh MLS start and still hunting for his first league goal, defies the odds by striking for three, he has built a damn strong case. Sounders youngster David Estrada stoked all the scoring steam as his club cruised regally into victory lane.
Robbie Keane might disagree. Or maybe not. That man knows his soccer. He’d probably check the box next to “Estrada,” too.
This report says Estrada’s personal Twitter account grew by 500 followers. Player of the week honors, hat tricks, Twitter, victories for the team … now that’s a real win-win-win-win for young Estrada.
