Toronto FC manager Paul Mariner is getting plenty of well-deserved credit for turning things around post-haste at BMO, but something like this doesn’t happen without great leadership on the field, too.
Torsten Frings, take a bow.
The German veteran was been a commanding presence as TFC took four of a possible six points last week, going into Montreal and emerging with a massive 3-0 win and then drawing at home to the better-rested Red Bulls. With that, the Reds are 1-1-3 in Mariner’s first five in charge along Exhibition Place.
Frings was a midfield bossing beast in the 3-0 win at Montreal, upstaging Impact debuting Designated Player Marco Di Vaio. Frings punctuated his steady night with a lightning strike of a free kick, his first MLS goal.
Saturday in Toronto, Frings’ corner kick hit the sweet spot as teammate Danny Koevermans equalized against New York. Meanwhile, he matched the Red Bulls high-rev midfield as Toronto extended its unbeaten streak to four games.
