United States v Mexico - International Friendly

Soccer birthdays: Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott turns 30.

Longtime Paraguay international striker Roque Luis Santa Cruz, whose best days came at Bayern Munich, turns 31.

Finally, Ivan Hurtado turns 39. Not exactly a household name, I know, but hear me out. This cat played for 13 different clubs. (And actually moved clubs 14 different times; he had three separate runs at Barcelona SC of Ecuador.) Besides all that, Hurtado suited up 167 times for Ecuador starting in 1992. Consider all that and you can draw but one conclusion: That man has lived.

Big Important Story of the Day: There was some MLS positional interchange based on some results last night. But we’re not talking much about that today, now are we? Not when the United States national team pit the kibosh on Mexico’s day in the soccer sun, spoiling all that spirit of Olympic good feeling with a 1-0 win at Azteca. That was the first win ever in Mexico’s capital city for the United States.

*Ahead on the blog today: Noah Davis will help you relive and review more of the U.S. win. Maybe. Or perhaps he’s got something even more grand in mind. I know the man has it in him.

PST background noise while blogging today: Those DVRed MLS matches from last night. Speaking of which …

We’ll leave you with this: After such a momentous U.S. win, I look at the MLS teams that played matches last night – especially the ones who forced their fans to choose between club and country by playing right on top of each other – and I just shake my head.

*Always subject to change; you know how it is…
