Sami Khedira confirms the obvious, that he will leave Real Madrid this summer

Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira confirmed today via Instagram the worst-kept secret in the sport: that he will be leaving the Bernabeu for a new club this summer at the expiry of his contract.

The 28-year-old German has made just 11 La Liga appearances this season mostly due to various injuries, and has just 24 league appearances in the last two. His absence was felt heavily during his spells on the bench, but Khedira has been hampered by injuries and inconsistencies for much of the last two years.

Today, he took to Instagram to thank the fans and his teammates for his five seasons at Real Madrid, having come over from Stuttgart in the summer of 2010. Khedira made 161 total appearances for Real Madrid, scoring nine goals.

There have been plenty of rumors about where he will land, but the one that seems to make the most sense is Juventus. 36-year-old Andrea Pirlo showed signs of weakness and aging this season, missing games due to injury and proving weak defensively, especially in the absence of Paul Pogba. Khedira would be the perfect man to come in and give Arturo Vidal some relief from the acres he’s covering, and the German would work into the mix well as Pirlo is phased out.

It’s also definitely possible that he could make a return to the Bundesliga in his home country. Unfortunately, a consistent Champions League contender is difficult to find outside of Bayern Munich, and it’s unlikely Khedira would land anywhere that the chance of missing out on European play is there. Wolfsburg would have the money to sign him and could be a player for his signature, but they are relatively new returnees to the Champions League scene. Bayer Leverkusen has made the big dance the last three seasons, and he could make some sense for them as well, but Bayer has never proven itself as a big spender, and hasn’t made much noise in the Champions League tournament.

Thus far, rumors to Bayern itself haven’t truly solidified, which is actually somewhat surprising, but it would be tough to fit Kheidra into that lineup with it already difficult enough to get Schweinsteiger and Xabi Alonso on the field at the same time as it is.
