If we scratched out a quick list of things that would improve things for the New York Red Bulls, “Get Tim Cahill going” would surely be near the top.

It’s not that the Red Bull’s Aussie international has been awful this year. He’s been effective in spots – but ultimately not productive. And for a DP who plays second forward or attacking midfielder, no goals and two assists heading into the meat of the season just isn’t good enough.

So, it must do hearts around Harrison good to see that Cahill has No. 1 on the year.

His calm finish put the Red Bulls in the lead this afternoon at BMO Field, where the visitors lead by a goal at the half (1-0).

By the way, there is a lot of quality work on the effort, starting with Jonny Steele’s wonderful pass for Miller. Miller’s ball across is right where it needs to be, and then Thierry Henry’s step-over dummy is classy stuff, too.

Ironically, Cahill’s first goal of 2013 came as he played deeper in the midfield that usual; Cahill is occupying Dax McCarty’s holding midfield role today for his recuperating teammate.

Here is Cahill’s first-half goal.
