We probably could also have headlined this one, “Danny Williams ... remember him?”
In some parallel universe, we might be discussing Williams as a potential World Cup starter for Jurgen Klinsmann’s U.S. national team. Don’t forget, the tough and talented midfielder was a U.S. starter in important qualifiers just more than a year ago.
As it is, the guy just cannot catch a break, injury-wise, and he is losing a race to get back into the national team picture.
Williams, 24, moved from Germany’s Hoffenheim to England’s Reading during the summer. He was just finding his feet following an injury-troubled summer (we talked about it here) when health issues set in anew.
After more than a month on the injury shelf, Williams was back at training and about to challenge for his spot once again. Then … alas, yet another injury setback.
But for the litany of injuries, Williams would probably be second on Klinsmann’s depth chart at holding midfielder, behind only Jermaine Jones.
