VIDEO: Aron Johannsson scores acrobatic overhead kick goal to finish Eredivise season in solid form

AZ Alkmaar completed a late push for a Europa League spot, and US international Aron Johannsson has been at the forefront of that push.

Johannsson came into today’s season finale against Excelsior with two goals in his last two league matches, and he added to that tally in spectacular fashion.

The 24-year-old got back on the scoresheet in just the fifth minute today with an acrobatic overhead kick. The goal was impressive not only for the obvious degree of difficulty, but also for the way Johannsson reads the bounce well before Excelsior defender Sander Fischer, who got totally fooled by the flight of the ball.

Excelsior goalkeeper Jordy Deckers also probably should have saved the shot, but he was caught off guard by the ambitious attempt and the ball snuck right over his head into the back of the net.

Johannsson would get another goal in the 57th minute to complete the 4-1 scoreline, his fourth goal in his last three matches. That goalscoring record has translated directly into four straight victories for AZ to finish out the season, and it secured the club into third place in the Eredivisie table, a guaranteed Europa League position. Johannsson not only racked up goals, but important goals as well. He scored an 88th minute winner in a 3-2 victory over Breda last weekend, and he bagged the team’s second in a 2-0 win over struggling Twente.

Fully back from his early-season injury struggles, Johannsson has made it very difficult for Jurgen Klinsmann to ignore his presence by producing some fantastic form to end the season.
