VIDEO: Louis van Gaal says Manchester derby win is notable

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was obviously pleased as his club torched bitter rivals Manchester City 4-2 at Old Trafford today, and he let it flow out.

“I am very proud, and I am very happy for the fans because it means a lot for the fans and we want to give it to the fans,” van Gaal said. He continued later, “I enjoy it [this win] much more, and I drink a glass of wine more.”

Van Gaal acknowledged that he was aware of the atmosphere in Old Trafford, and could hear the fans supporting the team throughout the game.

“I do nothing. I am only watching and analyzing, and that’s it,” he said. “But also the players shall hear the boost, and I’m very happy for them, but also happy for Man United.”

Van Gaal wouldn’t agree that it was his club’s best possible game, because the beginning was poor, as Sergio Aguero put City 1-0 up inside 8 minutes. But it came close to what he calls a perfect game. “No, because I think we started very badly. The first 10 or 15 minutes there was a lot of stress in the build-up, but as usual we have a very good team spirit and we come back.”

Towards the end of the interview, there was a notable answer from van Gaal regarding his star players who were stuck yet again on the bench this week in Angel Di Maria and Falcao. Michael Carrick went off injured with three minutes to go, and van Gaal had no substitutes left to replace him with. Van Gaal said after the match, “I was a little bit stupid to give minutes to players who work very hard in training, and it’s a warning for me that I don’t have to do that, because you always should keep one possibility to change in reserve.” Clearly, van Gaal wanted to give a shout out to his substitutes who may not have bee the stars of the day.
