He wants to go out a champion, he said today, announcing his impending retirement at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Regardless, Landon Donovan is still going to go out.

Announcing a decision that will take effect at the end of the 2014 campaign, the Galaxy star outlined his reasons for stepping away, explaining a life spent deferring to what’s best for his career is about to change. Happiness is the priority, he said, with that priority set to take the 32-year-old away from the field.

In today’s press conference, Donovan also gave his perspective on the league’s growth, with Wednesday night’s All-Star Game in Portland, Ore., standing in stark contrast to what he saw when he joined the league in 2001. The MLS Donovan’s leaving in 2014 is in much better shape than the circuit he joined over a decade ago.
