34-year-old Brooks spent 2017 in a semi-regular role with the Packers. He didn’t generate any interest this offseason. The suspension should officially push Brooks into retirement.

Beat writers, fans, and even the normally even-handed Marvin Lewis have been impressed by Brooks, the team’s supplemental draft pick. With Odell Thurman facing suspension, Brooks could earn a big role to start the season. Grab him in dynasty leagues.

Brooks, who was kicked out of school in April, will be available in the July 13 supplemental draft.

The Niners are one of several teams thought to have interest in the troubled yet talented prospective supplemental draftee. Brooks’ pro day is set for June 22.

Coach Al Groh said when Brooks reported to UVA spring practice, the senior linebacker was so out of shape he vomited seven times. McLoughan believes Brooks has that rare combination of size and speed that could be an asset at any linebacker position.

The Bucs, Niners, Dolphins, and Patriots are known to have interest. The Rams could use a big linebacker.

Brooks was kicked off the Cavaliers by friend of Pats coach Bill Belichick Al Groh in April. If New England uses a a supplemental first-round pick on Brooks, they’ll surrender their first-rounder in next year’s draft. Brooks reportedly runs a 4.5.

San Francisco and Miami have shown the most consistent attention to Brooks. It’s possible someone could use a third-round pick on him.

The Niners intend to promote 2011 first-round pick Aldon Smith into the starting lineup, becoming an every-down player. Brooks, 28, has a good chance to test the market after posting career highs in tackles (50) and sacks (7) as a 16-game starter last season. A history of off-field issues may affect Brooks’ market value, but he plays a very valuable NFL position.
