Hewitt

The 25-year-old had a brutal .137 batting average and .317 OPS through 134 plate appearances this season between High-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. Hewitt was the 24th overall pick in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft.

The third baseman will get a $1.3 million signing bonus. He has already played 26 games for Single-A Clearwater, hitting .220 with one homer and seven RBI.

Hewitt is long on tools, but he’s not a baseball player yet. He’s more likely to end up in center field than at shortstop, and he’ll probably progress slowly through the system. The Phillies need some upside guys in their system, but they may regret not taking an advanced pitcher here.

Hewitt looked like quite a reach when the Phillies drafted him 24th overall in 2008, and he was a big disappointment while hitting .223/.255/.395 with a 77/9 K/BB ratio in 233 at-bats in the New York-Penn League last season. He’s just 20, but he’s already moved from shortstop to third base to the outfield and he’s still a long way from resembling a prospect.
