James Laurinaitis’ former backup at Ohio State, Spitler has registered 14 special teams tackles in 28 games over three years with the Dolphins.

Spitler is a pure special teams player. He played just 11 snaps on defense last season. The 26-year-old has 23 career tackles in three seasons.

They’re also retaining ERFA QB Pat Devlin and CB R.J. Stanford at $480,000 and $630,000, respectively. Devlin is a third-stringer with a weak arm. Stanford is a special teamer. Spitler, 26, is another special teamer who can make $1.323 million in base salary once he signs the one-year restricted tag.

A career special teamer, Spitler appeared in 12 games for the Dolphins last season. He’ll fight for one of the final spots on the Ravens’ 53-man roster.

Spitler will see some time on special teams. He’ll be in uniform for tonight’s game with the Patriots.

Spitler, another well-named former Ohio State linebacker, was beaten out by J.D. Folsom and converted OLB Charlie Anderson. He should clear waivers.

Spitler spent two nights in the hospital, “basically on his death bed,” earlier in the week. The special teams candidate has resumed practicing after beginning to regain some of the weight.

Mitchell fits best as an early-down inside linebacker. He’ll give the Dolphins depth there while trying to make the club as a special teamer. The signing could signal the end for Austin Spitler, who is nursing an ankle injury.
