Sung-Mun Song is dealing with an oblique injury.
Song suffered the injury during a recent batting practice session and will be shut down from baseball activities until mid-February, which coincides with the Padres kicking off spring training in Arizona. The 29-year-old Korean infielder is expected to occupy a versatile multi-position role in his San Diego debut and offers some appeal in deeper fantasy formats. He’s expected to be a full go early in camp, but the recurring nature of oblique injuries makes this a developing situation worth monitoring for fantasy managers.

Sung-Min Song is expected to play multiple positions in his Padres debut.
“Wherever we can get his bat in the lineup, that’s what we’re going to try to do. And we want to find a spot for him where he can be productive for the Padres, and there’s a lot of different places that I think he can fit,” newly-minted Padres skipper Craig Stammen told reporters earlier this week. He also floated the possibility of Song seeing time in the outfield, a notable wrinkle given that the 29-year-old spent most of the past few seasons in Korea at third base. The 29-year-old appears primed for a versatile super-utility role, which modestly boosts his fantasy appeal — particularly in deeper mixed leagues. He’s a challenging hitter to forecast for fantasy purposes but projecting double-digit homers and steals doesn’t seem outlandish.

Padres signed INF Sung-Mun Song to a four-year, $15 million deal.
The deal includes a $4 million player option for 2029 and a $7 million mutual option for 2030 with a $1 million buyout. The 29-year-old hit .315/.387/.530 with 26 homers, 90 RBI, and 25 stolen bases for the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization in 2025. He has a scoop in his swing, which could be problematic against the high velocity in Major League Baseball, but he showed a well-rounded skillset in Korea and is a solid defender at a few positions, so he could emerge as a super utility player for the Padres.

Robert Murray of Fansided reports that the Padres have agreed to a three-year contract with infielder Song Sung-Mun.
Independent journalist Francys Romero adds that the deal, which is still pending a physical, will be in the neighborhood of $13 million over three seasons. The 29-year-old slugger slashed a monstrous .315/.387/.530 with 26 homers, 90 RBI and 25 stolen bases for the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization in 2025. While he played primarily at third base in the KBO, Sung-Mun seems destined to play second base for the Padres with Manny Machado entrenched at the hot corner.

Yonhap News’ Jeeho Yoo reports that Kiwoom Heroes 3B Song Sung-mun will be posted and available for all 30 MLB teams this winter.
The 29-year-old Song has posted his two best seasons in his last two years. In 2024, he slashed .340/.409/.518 with 19 HR, 104 RBI, and 21 steals, and then followed that up in 2025 by slashing .315/.387/.530 with 26 HR, 90 RBI, and 25 steals. The left-handed hitter is primarily a third baseman, but can also play second base, which will give him some added value on the market. According to FanGraph’s Eric Longenhagen, Song has been platoon neutral in the KBO but has a scoop swing that could be vulnerable to high fastballs at increased velocity. He has good defensive and baserunning value, but he might profile more as a utility player who hits .230 with some pop.
