Maybin never reached the ceiling many thought he had back when he was one of the top prospects in the game, but he wound up having a long, solid major league career. All told, the 34-year-old put together a .254/.323/.374 batting line with 72 home runs and 187 stolen bases across 15 seasons for 10 different teams.

Maybin spent the majority of the 2021 campaign at Triple-A Syracuse after appearing in nine games for the Mets back in May. The 34-year-old journeyman outfielder should be able to land a minor-league deal this offseason if he wants to continue his playing career.

Maybin was designated for assignment after he went just 1-for-28 in nine games for the Mets. He can elect free agency, but the market will be limited there, as well.

Maybin was a sensible add by the Mets after injuries hit, but he went 1-for-28 in nine games and the club has decided it’s time to give someone else a shot. Assuming he clears waivers, Maybin can elect free agency if he wants.

Maybin was recently acquired by New York from the Cubs for cash considerations that totaled one dollar. The 33-year-old will also be starting Wednesday night while the Mets recover from a devasting string of injuries that have left them bare on their major league roster.

Maybin had been playing this season with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate in Iowa and was slashing just .103/.186/.205 through 43 plate appearances there, but the Mets are desperate for outfield depth with Michael Conforto (hamstring), Jeff McNeil (hamstring), Brandon Nimmo (finger), Albert Almora (shoulder), and Kevin Pillar (face) all currently sitting on the injured list. The 34-year-old figures to join the MLB roster later this week.

Maybin will head to the team’s alternate site. The 33-year-old was released by the Cubs on Saturday and will operate as organizational depth.

The writing appeared to be on the wall when the team elected to ink defensive stalwart Jake Marisnick to a major-league deal to serve as a reserve outfielder earlier this offseason. The well-traveled 33-year-old veteran should be able to latch on with another organization this season.

Maybin registered an underwhelming .247/.307/.387 triple-slash line with one home run and three stolen bases across 101 plate appearances with the Tigers and Cubs last year. He’ll compete for a spot on the Cubs’ Opening Day roster as a reserve outfielder this spring.

Happ tweaked his ankle while running the bases on Wednesday night, though Cubs manager David Ross made it sound like his absence Thursday is more precautionary than anything. Cameron Maybin will start in center field and bat fifth in the matinee game against the Pirates and right-hander Chad Kuhl.
