Titans coach Mike Munchak believes Colin McCarthy is ready for an expanded role next season, and feels comfortable using him as a ''three down linebacker.’'
“He has some learning to do — he’s a young man — but we’re excited about his progression, the way he finished the season and the energy he brings to the defense,” Munchak said. “So everything is a plus with him. He is the kind of player you love to have on your football team. We feel very comfortable having him in there on all three downs.”

Rookies Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy have picked up snaps while staying on the field in nickel packages.
The Titans want Ayers on the field as much as possible now that he has a command of the base and nickel packages. McCarthy is playing well enough that Barrett Ruud may be the odd man out once he returns from a groin injury. McCarthy had 11 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception in Week 12.
  • FA Linebacker #54
Titans MLB Barrett Ruud (groin) has been ruled out for Week 13.
Replacement Colin McCarthy has 28 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception over the past three games and will make another start. Neither linebacker has graded out particularly well against the run, but McCarthy will continue to be a starter in IDP leagues. Ruud doesn’t have a timetable for return.
  • FA Linebacker #52
Titans MLB Colin McCarthy recorded a team-high nine tackles and recovered two fumbles in Sunday’s win over the Bills.
McCarthy continues to be wildly impressive in place of Barrett Ruud (groin). Over the last four weeks, the rookie has 37 tackles, an interception, two passes defensed and the two fumble recoveries. He’s threatening to “Pipp” Ruud.

The Titans believe they may have found a potential core player to build their defense around in Colin McCarthy.
McCarthy acclimated himself quickly when Barrett Ruud missed time with injuries, starting seven games and recording 68 tackles and three forced fumbles. According to Pro Football Focus, McCarthy checked in as the NFL’s No. 31 inside linebacker. He is fully expected to open next season as a starter in Tennessee’s 4-3 alignment.
  • FA Linebacker #54
Titans MLB Barrett Ruud left Sunday’s loss to the Falcons with a groin injury and did not return.
In terms of job security, Ruud can’t afford injuries. Rookie Colin McCarthy was wildly impressive when Ruud was out with a shoulder injury earlier this month, and posted another strong performance in relief yesterday. It’s possible McCarthy will unseat Ruud for the starting job even when the veteran is healthy.
  • FA Linebacker #54
Titans declared MLB Barrett Ruud (groin) inactive for Sunday’s game against the Bills.
The Titans can afford to play it safe with Ruud as rookie Colin McCarthy continues to impress. Meanwhile, Jared Cook passed his concussion tests and is a full go. The rest of the Titans’ inactives: QB Rusty Smith, WR Donnie Avery, T Byron Stingily, C Kevin Matthews, DT Zach Clayton and CB Tommie Campbell.
  • FA Linebacker #54
Titans placed MLB Barrett Ruud (groin) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Ruud had been inactive the past three weeks due to the injury. The 28-year-old will finish his seventh season with 57 tackles. Now that rookie Colin McCarthy has emerged as the future starter in the middle, Ruud will be playing elsewhere in 2012. He’s an impending free agent.

Colin McCarthy started at middle linebacker in place of Barrett Ruud (groin) Sunday.
McCarthy, a fourth-round rookie, did not disappoint. He led the team with eight tackles and earned praise from his teammates and coaches. “He did fantastic,” DC Jerry Gray said. “If you are a (middle) linebacker you have to be all over the field. You can’t think of yourself as a rookie. He did a really solid job.” The extent of Ruud’s injury is unclear.

Coach Mike Munchak said Monday that Barrett Ruud will remain the Titans’ starting middle linebacker when he returns from his shoulder injury.
Rookie Colin McCarthy filled in well against the Panthers, but the Titans still trust Ruud more. “Barrett is still our Mike linebacker,” Munchak said. "(Sunday) was a great opportunity for Colin and he took advantage of it.” Ruud’s injury was initially described as a “burner.” He is on a one-year contract, so perhaps McCarthy will take over as the starter in 2012.
