Contrite Spartan WR thankful for second chance

It’s been a little more than five months since a brawl at Rather Hall embarrassed the Michigan State football program and put a big dent in their depth chart heading into their bowl game.

Several players involved in the incident were charged, with some either voluntarily or involuntarily leaving the program or placed on suspension.

One of the suspended players was last year’s second-leading receiver in yardage, B.J. Cunningham. He’s since returned from the suspension, and the receiver expressed thanks following this weekend’s spring game for being allowed to return to the program.

And also said it’s time to put the incident behind them and move on toward the upcoming season.

“I thank Coach (Mark Dantonio), the coaching staff and the fans for welcoming us back,” Cunningham said. “We’re not going to let anybody down again. Our teammates wanted us back. They welcomed us back with open arms. We apologized to them. We’re going to move forward and progress for next season.”

Incidentally, Cunningham caught a touchdown pass from starting quarterback Kirk Cousins in the spring finale, and finished with two receptions for 38 yards.
