Ex-Sooner Mike Winchester killed in Okla. City airport shooting

Unfortunately, another national news story has a connection to college football.

Tuesday, a man, subsequently identified as a Southwest Airlines employee, was shot and killed at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City. It was further confirmed that the victim in the incident was Mike Winchester, a former punter who was a starter on Oklahoma’s 1985 national championship team.

Winchester’s son, James Winchester, was a longsnapper for the Sooners and currently plays for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The elder Winchester also had two daughters who were Sooner student-athletes.

Our hearts are truly heavy for the entire Winchester Family. Mike was a former Sooner student athlete as was his son James/daughter Carolyn https://t.co/lD1peloI4X

The suspect, who has yet to be identified by police, was found dead of what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head body in a red pickup on the second level of a parking garage at the airport. From The Oklahoman:

[Oklahoma City police Capt. Paco] Balderrama said the shooting was believed to be a premeditated act against Winchester.

“This individual went there and waited ... to take his opportunity, this was not random,” Balderrama said.

Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to all of those impacted by the tragedy.
