The 2012 season has yet to start and Nebraska has already solidified its non-conference schedule for the 2015 season.
Both BYU and South Alabama announced via separate press releases Thursday that the respective schools have agreed to a future game or games versus the Cornhuskers in Lincoln. The Cougars are first up, traveling to Memorial Stadium for its one-off on Sept. 5 to open the 2015 season.
“This is a great opportunity to play an outstanding football team in one of the storied football stadiums in the country,” said BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe. “Nebraska was looking for a game in 2015 and the timing was good for BYU. I look forward to developing a long-term relationship with Nebraska.”
The game will mark the first time the two programs have ever faced each other on a football field.
The Jaguars, meanwhile, announced a two-game series with the ‘Huskers. The school, which will compete at the Div. 1-A (FBS) level for the first time in 2012 as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, will go on the road week after BYU to face the ‘Huskers in 2015, then returns for a game Aug. 31, 2019, that will serve as the season opener for both teams.
“We’ve got another team to add to the list of many that we’re playing, big-time schools. This excites our players and everyone else in the football program,” Jags head coach Joey Jones said. “We know that every year we are going to play two or three big-time teams around the country; that’s what we want to do, we are looking forward to it.”
South Alabama will also face North Carolina State and navy during that season.
In addition to home games versus BYU and South Alabama, Nebraska will travel to Miami (Fla.) and host Southern Miss in 2015.
